So, my husband brought home two baby turkeys last night. I pulled what I thought was crusted poop, but my husband explained it was the umbilical cord. The baby bled quite a bit, and I feel horrible. My husband put pressure on it and stopped the bleeding. Nothing came out other than what I have now learned is the string. No intestines or anything like that. The bird is acting fine. Chirping, drinking, eating, walking, climbing. I'm just still worried I did some permanent damage. Does anyone have any insight on this? We have cleaned the area and put neosporin on it to try to prevent infection. I think it looks like a big hole on him now, but my husband says it's actually not that bad. Idk. I've never raised turkeys. We have geese, chickens, ducks, and guineas. I honestly did not know until this happened that there even was an umbilical cord for baby chicks.

Welcome To BYC

I'm sorry about your Poult.
Do you have any photos of him and of the navel?

Sounds like you are treating the would well. Acting fine is good too and not seeing anything hanging out of the wound is good too.

Tend to the open wound/navel just as you are. Keep him on clean dry bedding.
