Thickness of hardware cloth

Hello! We are building a coop for our birds and my husband ordered hardware cloth which is 0.4 mm. This seems very flimsy, I am concerned a racoon can tear it. Can anyone suggest the proper gauge of hardware cloth for our coop? Thank you! Jamie

Standard 1/2" HWC is 19 gauge, 1/4" is 23 gauge. 1/2" is usually recommended for that reason.

I can easily bend and with not a ton of effort tear, compromise 1/4" or 23g by bending it in the same area several times.
I can bend 1/2" 19g HC, although not too easily and it would take significantly more effort than I'm willing to expend to compromise it.

Late to the party here, but I am a "belt & suspenders" kind of guy who over builds everything. Went with 16 gauge, 1/2" x 1/2". Spent about 2x's more, but could not find any 19 gauge that wasn't a rust bucket from China out of the box...
Fencer Wire- 1x1, 1/2x1/2, black. They also have 14 ga, 1x1 if you want heavier
