    Sand in run

I was happy to see this post, this is what we want to use in our new run. Lowe’s sells .33yd bags of construction sand but I think it is too fine (more like beach sand). Would you post a close up pic with something for reference (coin, ruller, etc) so I have something to compare what we can...

What did you do in the garden today?

We added shutoff valves for each bed as well so we can adjust water or turn off when we aren’t using a bed. I’ve been using drippers on hose timers for our potted garden with good results.

What did you do in the garden today?

Expansion and drip irrigation have been the focus for the past few weeks. Garden was 30’x80’ and is now 30’x120’. We expanded to run fence around the pineapples (deer like pineapple it seems…LOL) and add blueberries, blackberries and raspberry). Also slightly adjusted the beds so we can...

    Can chickens eat sprouted sunnhemp

Revising this older thread: We planted 401 Rye grain and Sunn Hemp in the run during construction of the coop, just to help with erosion. The chickens have obviously decimated both. They really enjoy the Sunn Hemp leaves, I’ve brought in young stalks (without nitrogen nodules) and the...

Central Florida Coop and Run (in progress)

Finally got the thermostatically controlled attic vent fan installed and the auto chicken door (went with a different one due to clearance issues with the shutter). This has been some project - weekends mostly. New respect and admiration for those who can knock something like this out in a...

Central Florida Coop and Run (in progress)

More progress, and we finally have chicks. I shared my home office with them for a week, then they went into the coop brooder. They outgrew the brooder this weekend and are confined to the coop itself. Run roof and electrical are connected (lights, GCFI outlet, etc). Next weekend they...

Central Florida Coop and Run (in progress)

Progress has been slow, but we are making progress. Work seems to get in the way of life I guess. Need to finish installing the trim on top of the hardware cloth (that stuff is a pain to lay straight). Laying gravel on the wire apron and underlayment. Then install the roofing panels over...

Central Florida Coop and Run (in progress)

There are 3 ea shuttered openings (aprox 30” x 30”). They will be covered with hardware cloth and propped open most of the time. The two not under the covered run are hinged at the top to help with rain. The one under the covered run has tradition shutters. I also have a 15” space high...

Central Florida Coop and Run (in progress)

After talking to other locals and research, it’s clear that Central Florida has its share of obstacles & threats for keeping chickens. Weather including torrential rains, violent thunderstorms, hurricanes, high heat & humidity is one aspect. The local wildlife includes various snakes...

    Greetings from Central Florida

Hello and thank you for being a welcoming community. My wife and I moved to Central Florida about 4 years ago and finally finished construction of our new home on 2 acres. The wife has wanted chickens since we got married 28 years ago, and this is our first home with space and other that...
