That's odd, hope you can get something suitable. I use Westgate Labs for stool samples, they're pretty good at identifying issues and have a fast turnaround. Harkers (pigeon drugs) offer a great range of non prescription cures and can be got on Amazon Prime if it turns out she has worms or a...
Just another thought. I've moved on to homeopathy with Goldie, as can't keep giving her strong drugs after 2 yrs of pendulous crop & repeat episodes. I've found nux vom works quite well. 4 drops of 30c straight into beak or on a small amount of oily fish (disguises taste). Makes for a fair...
Hi there, another uk chicken lover here. Have been battling a chronic sour crop/pendulous crop situation for the longest time, my Goldie's still going though!
The meds you need will depend on how bad it is. Is the crop full of sour liquid? If so, I've learned from experience that best thing to...
Hi Daniel, I'm just across the border in overcast North Essex. Been so wet lately our ditch has become a moat. Good for worms though and the chickens love a muddy puddle!
Hi Perris, mine are also moulting late & feeling the cold. I give the oldest one a blow dry now and then to warm her up (she loves it). Privileges of age!
Thanks for asking. Can't get aqua mox here in UK or any fish antibiotic, which is frustrating. The gland ballooned so dusted off my credit card and took her to the vet. She lanced it and cleared out a plug of oil then flushed it through. There was no pus (perhaps the Baytril did its job) but it...
Thank you, I'll do that and also try the aqua mox. She's a full sized hen (2.2 kg). I'll try the permethrin, too. I've been using sulfur dust but can switch. There are a lot less mites now but I can't seem to completely clear them. I blow torch the inside of the coop every few days to get any...
Hi All,
I've discovered my lovely little hen Brownie has got an infected and blocked preen gland. I've been following the PoultryDVM website advice of hot compresses and massage, however, the swelling is still growing and it's obviously not working. I'm terrified it will rupture at some point...
Thanks. :)
Update: she laid a massive soft shelled egg this evening (after the calcium and a warm bath earlier in the day). I'm hoping that this was the issue, or the main issue in any case. Will see how things look in the morning. Thanks again for all your help.
Ok, that's a great help, thank you :)
Sorry - just thought. How much is safe to give? I have some calcium carbonate 800mg & Vit D 5ug tablets at hand. Would these work and would she need a whole one? Otherwise I can order calcium citrate 250 mg + Vit D ~5ug which will be with me in a few days...
Thanks for your reply. Sadly, that makes sense. Do you know how much calcium I should use, please? She's still quite perky so I really hope she can pass it and pull through.
Re. the mites, I've emptied and washed their house out with Poultry Shield. Changed, all the bedding, etc. Sprayed...
Hi All,
I wonder if anyone's seen anything like this - pics and symptoms as follows. I'm incredibly worried - I adore my chickens, they're very much pets.
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.) Gretel is a cross breed layer...
