    Scissor Beak

Thank you. We made the decision to cull it today. The beak is part of a bigger facial deformity. It is missing an eye as well. I should not have helped this one hatch.

    Scissor Beak

This little one hatched yesterday. Is it reasonable to assume it’s not going to thrive with that degree of misalignment? I had to do an assisted hatch with it yesterday. It didn’t pip and the cord was tightly wrapped around its legs and neck. I didn’t know that could even happen during a hatch.

    Hatching Question

Thank you. I don’t think this little one was meant to hatch. I probably shouldn’t have intervened.

    Hatching Question

I have 3 newly hatched chicks in the incubator, along with 3 more pipped eggs. I also had 2 with no pips. I rate my eggs and both of them I rated “A.” I took them both out to candle. No air sack left on 1 so I carefully made a hole and the chick was fully formed and dead, sadly. These are...

When can you tell if a cockerel is going to be a good one?

That's why I like this one. He looks at me and runs the other direction! I'm hoping he continues to be a good one.

When can you tell if a cockerel is going to be a good one?

That's what I was hoping to hear. I had to cull my other cockerel because he was too aggressive. Growing up, we had chickens. I would collect the eggs and the roosters would attack. As an adult, I still have a bit of a fear about being in an enclosed space near a rooster.

When can you tell if a cockerel is going to be a good one?

My cockerel is 5 months old and appears great with the hens and pullets. He isn’t aggressive with the flock and gives me plenty of space. He actually seems a little scared of the dominant hen and I’ve seen her knock him off when trying to mate. It’s all been fairly drama free. Is there an age...

HELP ! Brahmas eating only blue eggs!

I had that happen in my flock--just the blue eggs. One of the things I tried was fake blue eggs in the nesting boxes. It helped a little and went from an every day occurrence to maybe once a week. You could try curtains on the nest boxes when you put them in the coop to keep the eggs out of...

Thanks for taking the time to share. We’re getting our first batch of quail eggs soon and will be using your build as inspiration.

    "Quaviary" Build

Lovely aviary. Did you end up putting a roof on? We’re getting ready to build ours and it will be similar in design, but I’m in the PNW and it rains a lot so will need a roof.

AQI is 114 here. Not too bad. I had a scratchy throat last night from working outside. Maybe we’ll get a bit of rain soon and the air will clear.

Smokey in my area too. My boys are firefighters and they’ve been working nonstop along with the wildland crews. My dad was camping somewhere in NE WA and was told to evacuate. Lots of fires happening around the state. Got the hen house and nest boxes cleaned out yesterday. Added a taller lip...

Thank you! I didn't even think of bee sting yesterday; though, it makes perfect sense in hindsight. Will definitely be more aware of hot pavement from now on. I felt terrible yesterday thinking this was my fault.
