The chickens have decided to today in the rafters rather than their roost. This doesn't bother me that much. But then they decided to roost in the rafters on the other side of the shed and poop on my riding mower... infuriating!!! I finally decided to close off between the trusses in the shed...
We are getting eggs here!!!
Over the past few days our herbs started laying finally. 2, then 5!, then 4 and so on. We already have over a dozen eggs in the fridge from our girls. Lots of green shells.
I did clean out the coop last week and put new bedding in. I wonder if that had anything to do...
Our tomatoes, peppers, and marigolds have all sprouted. The tomatoes got a jump on me though. They sprouted and I didn't realize it so they got a little leggy, growing about 4 inches in just a day or two before I turned the lights on. The peppers and marigolds sprouted under the lights along...
I finished doing the cutouts yesterday and the two oldest kids helped me spray paint them all white. Now they have to name all these chickens so I can write the names on the cutouts.
When it trains it pours. Stay strong. The sun will shine again.
I hope you are doing alright. Don't forget about self-care from time to time, hard as it may be.
Interesting video clip I found on Facebook. Claims chickens heads are better than any camera gimble. I've seen the head movement trick first hand, but this is impressive still. https://www.facebook.com/share/v/1J7RHJyr8W/
I need to get them done... crazy busy with work lately. I started this and then had to get a new blade for the band saw. Now there's for cutouts done and piece of plywood waiting for the remaining four. That's the way it goes though...
The first seeds are planted! Indoors of course, but gardening nonetheless. DD and DS helped me plant trays of tomatoes (Super Beef, Black Cherry, and Roma), peppers (Carnival Bell and Jalapeno), and a 10-pack of marigolds. 150 starter cells in total, and that's just the start. Might be less...
Decorating the chicken coop!
I'm making plywood cut outs of chickens and chicks for the kids to paint. We'll put the chickens names on them and hang them either in the coop or the run. A bit of fun to get the kids reinvigorated for Spring and reignite an interest in their chicken pets. The...
Been a long time. Hope the gardens are all doing well. I'm just starting to plan this year's vegetable garden. The garden is under of blanket of snow at the moment. Only things really worth carrying about it there are the garlic and asparagus, both of which are still dormant for the winter...
Wild birds can get into the rafters over our covered run. I think I'm going to block that area off this year to keep them out so I don't risk them dropping poop into the run. Beyond that, any other thoughts on protecting the flock from avian flu?
I logged in for the first time in a long time. Hello, everybody!
I see some of you are getting eggs. I'm jealous. We have 8 hens, but 7 will be first time layers this Spring. We purchased them last summer as chicks. A'hole is the 8th (1st really). She's an old bitty these days and I don't...
