I know this is an old post, but I’m proof that people are still reading it in 2025 :) The link above is now broken. Here’s the updated one, for anyone looking: https://www.birdhealth.com.au/vent-gleet
Edit: I disagree with the article’s recommendation to cull chickens who don’t quickly respond...
I read your post just as I was pulling up to the vet yesterday. I was holding Candy and feeling so heavy hearted. Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking the time to send such a comforting and kind message. The vet echoed your thoughts and I was able to make a difficult decision knowing it...
Thanks for your reply @Eggcessive. Some updates. Her crop is still massive and squishy like a balloon — bigger than yesterday. She’s drinking water but not eating anything, including favorite foods. Her poop has changed. She’s alternating between closing her eyes and looking around while not...
Thank you for taking the time to respond @coach723. Your message reads like a voice of reason and hug — the exact combo I needed.
My husband and I decided to try to drain her abdomen tonight. We weren’t expecting much because she felt so solid, not like a water balloon which is what I think of...
Thank you for your detailed response, @azygous. Very helpful!
Glad you clarified the enema question. I had my suspicions but had seen some less experienced chicken keepers recommend the practice on this site. I will steer clear of enemas and encourage others to do the same.
I hope the oral...
History
My two year old ISA Brown hen, Candy, has had persistent vent gleet for a few months. Other than a messy bum and slightly thin egg shells, she was acting normal. I added acidified copper sulfate to her water, bathed her, and gave probiotics last month, but the vent gleet continued...
Hi @azygous. I'm adding my questions here because they relate to what you and others have commented in the thread. Three of my girls have persistent vent gleet. One has developed additional issues (very hard distended abdomen, squishy crop, not laying, lethargic), while the other two seem okay...
I’m so sorry @Lidigirl1200 and @BigBirdy. It’s heartbreaking when a feathered friend is sick.
At the time of my original post, I tried all the tricks and supports I’d learned from this site and “The Chicken Health Handbook” including taking Wyorp Rock’s advice to add calcium and D3. I also...
Thank you @Wyorp Rock. I’ve learned so much from you from reading through various threads, and I appreciate your input here.
I think her crop is okay right now, but I’ll remover her food until morning and monitor for sour or impacted crop. Helpful article.
I’ll try calcium citrate, too. I...
Thanks for the link and for your time, both of you. Sometimes it seems like older threads have more engagement, and I thought previous posters might chime in since the conditions are very similar. I’ll stick to my own thread to keep the communication clearer. :)
Hoping to get a response soon. Her condition has worsened since I posted earlier today (sleeping nearly constantly).
I don’t know what the illness is, or why it recedes and then comes back full force within weeks. The blue comb (cyanosis), months-long diarrhea, and no eggs for months are big...
Thank you for responding. I posted a new thread today with several pictures and a more detailed description.
Edit: But no comments on the new thread yet.
To add, crop is emptying in morning. Not noticing signs of respiratory illness. 2 year old ISA Brown hen. Sleeping nearly constantly now. Droopy feathers.
Please, does anyone know what the original poster’s hen’s illness is or how to treat it? My hen is going on bout three with floppy comb, dark blue, lethargy, diarrhea. She’s been extremely sick each time. Every 4-6 weeks, the illness comes back.
