Can "young" chickens be in cold coop?

Yes, I have. I spend a week and every evening, let the young chickens have their own little fenced off area, and feed them all treats along the fence so both groups can see each other while they eat. I do this every night, and then on the weekend, let them loose each day together. I have an...

Can "young" chickens be in cold coop?

Thanks for the input! I'm not sure if my basement is actually "heated". Our heater is on one side, but I don't believe there are any "vents" hooked up down there. But it probably stays in the high 50's, low 60's, I'm guessing. Its probably a good idea to acclimate them, a couple hours at a...

Can "young" chickens be in cold coop?

I've never integrated chickens in the winter before. I have 2 sets of chickens I hatched this winter. 2 hatched in October, and 6 in November. I moved them into the basement a while ago, they are now living together in a big dog crate. My question is, I'd like to move the dog crate to the...

Newly hatched chicks leg is bend outward instead of under?

I posted this in the hatching eggs section, but just incase that's not the right section... I just did a hatch of 5 eggs. Only 1 has hatched so far, and the chicks leg is developed out to the side instead of under it, so it can't walk! Does anyone know what to do? help!

Are "Ameraucana" and "Easter Egger" the same bird?

I wanted blue and green eggs this year. I bought Ameraucana chicks at the store, as well as purchased Easter Egger hatching eggs from a breeder. The Ameraucana chicks were all females. The dozen Easter Egger eggs hatched, and only gave me 3 roosters, no hens. I wanted Easter Egger hens. Are...

Eggs too big for my bantam hen?

I'm surprised you were able to touch her without her freaking out! Some of my hens, if they are laying in the nesting box, start hissing and growling if I even just walk into the coop, let alone try to touch them. i've never had this happen to my hens before, I'd love to hear what others have...

    Two flocks?

I have 35 chickens, and they consist of 4 mini flocks. I have a baby group who just aclimated to the coop(8 wks), a group not yet laying(12 wks), a group that just started laying (20 wks), and an adult laying group(2 yrs). All of them free-range together, but staying in their own space when...

What annoys you about your poultry?

I can't stand it when they poop on the deck. I cleaned it off from all the leaves and acorns the other day, and sure enough I get home, with a big pile of poop in the middle. I have to hose off the deck several times a week. I remember in early chicken days, getting a chicken book from the...

    Chicken making new balking sounds!

One of my Ameraucanas did this. She was squaking really loudly, so I went to see what was the matter. She would strut around the coop, jumping onto the roost, going "bawk bawk" and then jump back down. Saw her in a few nesting boxes, but no egg. A week later, I found my first olive egg!

Found mites(?) on hatching egg, but nowhere else!

I have egg crates as nesting boxes, and brought both boxes into the basement. I checked the egg crate that that particular hen was in, and saw nothing crawling around.

Found mites(?) on hatching egg, but nowhere else!

I have 2 broody hens I moved to dog crates in my basement (they are too big for the doorway of my coop). I moved them there on tuesday, 1 day before hatch day. They each have their own crate. I picked up one of the hatching eggs to see if the chick had pipped yet, and there were little white...

little small white bugs on hatching egg?

I have 2 broody hens hatching out eggs right now. Yesterday was day 21. I picked up one of the eggs to see if the chick had made a pip hole yet, and I noticed tiny, almost microscopic, little things on the eggs surface, walking around. I think I read somewhere on this site about mites, and...

    Crowing at night? (After dark)

Perhaps maybe they can hear the racoons that lurk around the coop. I dont candle eggs regularly, just to see which eggs are fertile and which ones aren't. No point in a hen sitting on an egg that isn't developing. The hens I have right now that are broody do not get mated with, so their eggs...
