    American serama thread!

Hi, I have, so far, purchased three silkied seramas. I have one left. The first rooster died at about a year old and the hen at nearly two. I still have one rooster, he's nearly a year old. There were no signs of illness before either died. Fine in the morning, dead at night. I have many other...

    Orange Mottled Chicken!

Speckled Sussex coloring comes from the mahogany gene which makes their feathers a dark red color on top of the mille fleur pattern. Your hen has the gold-colored feathers like a mille fluer d'Uccle. I think she may have Speckled Sussex in her, I would call her a mille fleur barnyard hen. ;) She...

    Opinions on breeds, please

Wow. Those are amazing! I'm in awe! They are really works of art. My great grandfather tied flies. I have a bunch of the flies he tied in a shadow box. I've been thinking about learning to tie flies with feathers from my chickens.

Can we see a picture of one of your hats? They sound really beautiful. Barnevelders have beautiful feathers, especially the blue variety. Otherwise I think Wyandottes (Silver, Gold or BLR) or Speckled Sussex would fit the bill. (not my bird)

    Owlbeards

If I could...I was on Greenfire Farm's website the other day, looking at the Ayam Cemani, and I really scared myself when I realized that if I had $4,000, I would spend it on a chicken.

    mites, mites, mites

Olive oil. I had two chickens get mites (luckily they were separated from my other chickens at the time because I was trying to breed them) and I washed them, trimmed the feathers around the vents then sprayed olive oil around their vents twice a day for two weeks. Cleared it right up! and the...

    Best Double Purpose Breed?

I think they will work out well. It would be really cool if they hatch the chicks, I am incubator challenged. Thank you for the advice!

    Best Double Purpose Breed?

I think I am going with the Speckled Sussex, because everybody else in my family really likes them. I'll probably get some chicks in the spring. I really struggle to get shipped eggs to hatch!
