I lived in oregon 9 years and it is my fave state of all ( beautiful scenic state and the people are generally so nice too) but for the last 3 years i have been living in Casablanca Morocco and i have to say it is really nice too , a lot of Morocco is like eastern Oregon , it's coast is a lot...
I only kept the one breed instead of a mixed flock , hatched out replacements in the spring and culled out unproductive birds and small birds ... they were looking nice when i lost the land i lived on and had to sell off the flock , i only kept about a dozen at a time anyway(including the roo)
Build as big as you can because .......
Chickens are addictive. Crazy addictive. Seriously. Really. Seriously addictive.
Just might be the best advice of all .....ROFL
If you want chickens that seek you out when they are about a week old get a couple of little tubs of mealworms or red wigglers (small ) and hand feed in the brooder do it every day or two for a week or two and when bigger they will come running everytinme they see you so ...be careful what you...
I havent had Chickens in a while ( 20 years or so) When i ordered Murray chicks then, i ordered in may , i think there will be problems with any early orders because of temps during shipping and hatching the first eggs after a molt in early spring . That being said , often hatcheries will buy...
About 2 weeks ago i was looking at a cataloge from one of the hatcheries and it listed Dominiques a pound heavy for hens and a pound and a half heavy for roosters over the breed standard . I sent an email to the hatchery and asked if their dominiques were that much larger than standard or was...
First i would like to thank you for answering . That kind of confirmed what i guessed would be how it goes with Brahmas. When i am ready to get birds i wanted about 6 -8 hens and a rooster ( about all the feed i would be able to afford to buy ) . I wanted to only order birds once every 5 years...
I am curious about Light Brahmas how many hens to a rooster in a small flock . I know it will depend on the rooster but i'm looking for a ballpark figure , for some breeds it can be as high as 12 or 15 hens to a rooster and a lot lower ratio for other breeds . I'm trying to make a rough guess...
Some of the English breeds ( Astralorps, Sussex and Orpingtons ) are pretty gentile breeds as well as some of the asiatic breeds ( Brahmas , Cochins ) Some of the better layers will be in the english breeds ( although light brahmas aren't bad either ) all of these birds lay a tinted or brown...
Sometimes i think that the Specks are SO friendly as a survival trait ( if you have to cull the flock the speck will be close to the last bird you will want to cull , your kids would never forgive you ...LoL )
While i haven't had chickens for 20 years i kept a flock of Speckled Sussex for about 5 years and i have nothing bad to say about them ( except that they have a tendency to be sidewalk supervisors whenever anything is going on around them ) They were beautiful gentle birds that produced nice...
I picked Foghorn because he was one of my fave cartoon characters when i was a kid ( i was born in the deep south so a rooster with a southern accent was priceless )
I love eggs over easy ,..... i've been in morocco for three years and havent been able to find a thin springy spatula ....and i've looked in every souk i've seen for one too and then most of their frying pans are aluminum with teflon .... not a cast iron skillet to be found anywhere
When i got SS about 20 years ago i bought 25 straight run from Murray , sent all but 2 roosters to freezer camp ( scrumpious roasters ) Just before it got really cold i culled my hens that didn't lay 4 a week without regard to speckles ( i did look at shape of the bird well feathered etc along...
