Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Hi! I have had some trouble these last two years. I injured my back and could do much. It is slowly but surely getting better, so all's good! The other thing that has happened is a weasel(maybe a mink?) got into my chicken pen and killed all of my hens. So, I'm starting over with three new...

Review by 'cute fuzzy chicks' in article 'How Much Room Do Chickens Need?'

I was told that I was giving my chickens too much room. However, they cannot always free range( a family of foxes and a couple of coyotes). So I fenced off a 30' X 30' area. Maybe overkill, but my 9 chickens seem to love it. So, I agree, more is better than less.

Neighbors Dog is Digging Into My Yard!

Dried blood with hot pepper would deter him, but you would have to reapply it every time it rains. Personally, I would run several strands of barb wire along the bottom of the fence.

Official BYC Poll: How Long Have You Been Raising Chickens?

6 years ago, at the state fair, a chicken coop on wheels caught our attention. we stopped and talked with the folks. Well, 3 pullets, a very iffy portable chicken coop (they said easy to move--haha) and $2000 later, we were in the chicken business. That first winter was rough, but we all...

    CAUGHT MY CHICKEN KILLER! *graphic*

We are not allowed to kill raccoons where I live--they have to be relocated. So, I buried my fence approximately 4" and also put fencing over top of my run. So far that has kept the racoons, hawks, and falcon away from my chicks. The only time they free range is when I'm outside with them.

    Ground cover for run

This past Fall, I decided to try the deep litter technique. So far it is working good, even with all the Spring rain. Needless to say, the girls stayed in the dry portion when there was snow on the ground
