I have three Auracanas 7 months old, laying nice strong eggs. They have small bald areas under their wattles, but the other girls (Black Giant and Silver-Laced Wyandotte) don’t. There are signs of new feathers coming in. No molting anywhere else, they are fully feathered and fluffy. Any...
I’ve had chickens for many years but always got pullets. This spring i got two-day olds. My girls are now 5 months old, and seem to be clueless about eating bugs and normal things that all my other girls always ate…lettuce, worms, grubs, melon. They do love mealworms. Their coop is directly...
Thanks everyone for your responses. I’ve moved them to my enclosed sunporch, very warm during day and heat lamp at night, at least the mess of pine shavings are no longer in my office! I put netting over an arrangement of dog corral panels, so they’ve got more room and can’t fly out. Seems to...
Great! what kind of chicken tractor do you have? I've been wanting to get one but there are bazillion to choose from! The girls will eventually go into their bir coop/ruyn, but I'd like a tractor to take them out for "a spin" without getting eaten by the foxes nearby
What is a transition setup between large dog crate and the coop for 5 chicks 3 weeks old? It's still too cool in Maine to put them in coop, and they'll be outgrowing the large dog crate in another week or two.
found this in the nesting box, have isolated a hen for 5 days that seemed to be less energetic than the others but I don't really know who laid it. How long before saying it was a one-off and letting her back with the flock? there's been no other incidence of a similar item for almost a week...
I have 5 laying hens. I just put one down, and she had a lot of lice, which means the others will shortly (or do already but they look really healthy). We have a foot of snow which precludes deep cleaning and power washing the coop. I can bathe the chickens and dust with poultry dust, but...
i wondered about molting, but no feathers, weather has been august in maine -- it was hot then very grey and damp and now beautiful and breezy/sunny in the 70s. I'd be fine with one or even two not laying, but all three at once? The Red Tent of Chickens?:hmm
I have three 8-9month old Golden Comets, (scarborough maine) they've been laying regularly every day. Suddenly, three days in a row, NO EGGS! The light hours couldn't have changed that much for them to start dormancy. No predators, they're healthy and eating well. No sign of them eating their...
