OK, sorry its been a little while but Zenmonkey and were talking off line. Do to the fact getting chicks this year has been not too easy. Some of the small breeders I spoke to simply where not shipping chicks this year do to the bird flu. Hence, I have ordered some Aquila chicks from Freedom...

    Lavender Orphington questions

Questions for anyone who knows. 1. Are the hens good layers and are they broody? 2. Do or will they take the hot MO summers and cool winters? 3. What size eggs do they lay? 4. I am guessing that as a whole they are a fairly gentle breed? Thank you for your time and knowledge.

trying to rebuild Great Grandmothers flock

You are very correct as long as you have a power grid and or the time to manage an incubator and then raise the chicks. I am not an end of the world total zombie war guy. (Too old and too sick to worry about all that). Just wanting to get back to basics and be a little healthier and teach grand...

trying to rebuild Great Grandmothers flock

I live in North Central MO. Some warm summers and some cool winters nothing too extreme. I have an incubator. I ask myself this question when doing things. "How did God do it" well he did it with broody hens. Because you don't need power.

trying to rebuild Great Grandmothers flock

I hope this is the right place for this question. With all the crazy bird flu and other general craziness going on I have decided to try and build a flock like my grandmother had (60+ years ago). As I think about it her flock was mixed birds. She had a flock that provided provided meat, eggs...

    Freedom Ranger New Hampshire Chickens

Have any of you raised any of the New Hampshire chickens that Freedom Ranger sells? If so: 1. Did you process any for meat and if so how did they preform? 2. If you kept any how did your hens preform as egg layers? 3. If you kept any roosters how was their temperament? 4. Did any hens go broody?

    Natural Farming JAADAM

Nut hatched just what JAADAM says. when in doubt look to how God did it. Sounds to simple to be true but look at nature it thrives all on its own. Normally when it does not do well its because of something man has done, pollution, invasive species, some how basically nocking the system out of wack.

I am saving my egg shells also, mix with vinegar and make liquid calcium. Plants can use right away. The shell just placed on garden takes years to break down. Which is ok but gives you nothing today. I do a combo of both.

    Natural Farming JAADAM

You are not wrong if you are growing in a modern or western way. The Modern Mono system grows huge fields all in wheat or corn or what ever, for the commercial farmer that is kind of required. Also, due to chemical fertilizers they kill a lot of the little micro organisms. They die off due to...
