Egg bound first time layer Black Copper Maran pls help

Update day after; she still eats but has not passed the egg, still in the nest box, won’t leave. She’s currntly in her 3rd bath with a bowl of sunflower seed oil sprinkled water melon in fron of her as a treat… Seems happy about that, at least. Insides not hanging out/protruding, but she keeps...

Egg bound first time layer Black Copper Maran pls help

Hi! I have a 7 mo old Black Copper Maran who has not started laying yet (but her sister has been laying for about 4 weeks), she eats normally but tends to want to lay down a lot, and her comb is more purple than red. I discovered it this morning and gave her a luke warn bath with a tiny bit of...

    Cream Legbar Crosses..

Hey, picking this up a year later…so - a Silverudds Blue roo and a Creme Legbar hen - will their offspring be Easter Eggers? Love chicken genetics but finding it somewhat confusing… The breeds usually used to create EEs are not available here (Sweden), or are very hard to find (at least...

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

Ah, that’s so sweet - thank you! I am sure yours’ll be stunning! And great choice, we had a different roo (Swedish Flower) when Hassan was hatched, I got 9 roos in that hatch and sold all but this guy, but he didn’t reach his full potential until I sold my Flower roo - that’s when he shodes his...

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

I figured it was your guy in your ”avatar”(?), he is beautiful! Bummer we can’t ship eggs across the Atlantic… I got chickens 2 years ago and immediately became Crazy Chicken Lady, had no idea they would be that much fun! Now next project is to breed (let Helen sit on more eggs she’s a killer...

Love Blue Splash, really hard to find those colors in Sweden, Orps are still pretty unusual here.

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

Thank you! I think his fluff has to do with the fact that he’s an English Buff Orpington, I don’t know exactly how that works but it seems to me that the Buff Orpingtons you get in the US are slightly less fluffy? My ladies are almost as big.

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

They are very docile, and in my experience, quiet. My former rooster was a Swedish Flower Hen and he drove us and the whole neighbourhood nuts with his crowing. Hassan, our BO rooster, doesn’t feel the need. I think it’s because he’s so large, he doesn’t feel threatened by much… I don’t know...

Buff Orpington roo x any breed hen - what did you get?

Thank you! Hatched nine, sold eight and kept this guy. He is so sweet and calm, good genes. Saw this Orp-mix in an ad, Buff Orp + Brahma and she was gorgeous! All Orp body with beige and chocolate feathers. Yeah, I really hope people share!

Why are my 9-month-old hens not laying?!

Agree with all before me; feed those ladies! 24/7! My flock of 15 goes through a 40 lbs bag of feed/week (though to be fair, a lot of it end up on the ground in their encolsed yard), they free range, they have free access to a huge compost aaand they get treats. If you can’t afford to feed your...

When do I let mommy and her chicks loose in the flock?

Agree, thank you both for posting this. I have a moma hen with 5 x 3-day old chicks in the coop separated by wire mesh from the others I will for sure open their door today and let them mingle. Of course mama hen can protect them, humans are always interferring with everything. Like you said, we...
