Sounds perfect!
I know what you mean. These things always happen at the most inconvenient times! I feel your frustration.
That depends on how bad the injured birds. If they’re not too bad off (no obvious tempting wounds or acting unwell) I’d let them back in the flock in just a couple days...
The injured chicks will likely continue getting picked on by the others. I would seperate them- preferably keep them with the others but in a crate. If there is only 1 aggressive chick, it should also be removed. It may need to be culled if it's harming the others you don't have an alternate...
Okay, I can't seem to let this go. @NatJ you've helped me figure out parentage in the past, maybe you can offer some insight into who Solo's parents could be?
Solo's dad could be either a Bielefelder or a silver w/ red & blue mixed breed rooster.
Solo's mom is supposed to be a black w/ gold...
Interesting. And your bird's feather coloration is similiar to mine, with the pale tips. How old is your BO? Is it from Hoover's?
I know diet can play a role in the feather development, but all my birds eat the same thing and the rest all have clean, neat, tight feathering. Unless this one...
It's mostly noticible on the surface feathers. The darker feathers underneath seem normal, but they're also harder to see.
Her feathers are similiar to birds with the shredder gene, but I didn't think BO's could have the shredder gene. Thought it was only the lavenders.
I got 3 BO chicks for my broody hen from TSC. One of them is beginning to develop some light coloration on the tops of her feathers. This is my first time with BOs so I don’t know if this is a normal coloration of chicken down or if perhaps I have something other than a BO.
I see 2 cockerels. The BLR Wyandotte in the front and maybe that's an OE or a legbar toward the back of your photos. That red one looks more like a RIR than a hybrid in my opinion. If it's a RIR, I'd say it's a pullet. My RIR hens seem to develop their combs early on. If it's not a RIR, then it...
I'm inclined to guess that the chick with the darker stripe is female. This is based on my experience with mixed breed chicks from Biele hens- I found that the darker distinct chipmunk pattern indicated female. (But also my mix isn't the same as yours).
I'm also inclined to guess that the chick...
I only hatched 1 egg from each of my mixed breed hens. Their moms are “known” based on which egg the chick hatched from. I’m pretty diligent, but a misidentified egg or an incubator mix-up is always possible. If I mixed up which chick came from which egg, I think this one is the only...
Entry #1
Giblet is a BCM x RIR hen. This was a portrait oriented photo that I cropped to landscape. I've included a thumbnnail of the original, too, in case I didn't crop it correctly.[
