    Sold as welsummers...but I don't think so

Hey there! At an auction about a month ago we bid on and won 11 "welsummer pullets". Today, I noticed that they all have black feathers coming in on their breasts. So I posted this picture in a welsummer group asking the question of if we'd been sold a box of cockerels. And they immediately...

Sort of frustrated with Hoover's Hatchery, but giving them another chance.

Here's a comparison between their listing and the Hoover bird.

I thought about that! But their example on their page of their birds looked much poorer than the one adult Chantecler I know came from Hoover that I already have. So I ended up going with Hoover. 🙃

I'd thought about that, but they get frostbite on their big combs and wattles, and don't lay as much as chanteclers.

Obviously they won't be 9lbs at 16 weeks. But they'll be decent size. 3-4 lbs butcher weight.

They start laying at 5-6 months. Butcher the cockerels at 16 weeks.

Super long story lol. Ever see the movie "Rock-a-Doodle" from the early 90's? Well the main character is a rooster named "Chantecler". I LOVED that movie as a little kid. That probably planted the seed lol. But now, as a guy in his mid thirties with a family and a small farm, I'm wanting for us...

They don't carry the breeds I wanted. And living 15 minutes from Cackle Hatchery, it's hard to think about using another hatchery in the first place lol

Late last year I put in an order with Hoover's Hatchery for 22 Partridge Chanteclers. 15 pullets and 7 cockerels. My plan was to keep nearly all the pullets, minus any that had obvious genetic defects, and keep the two best cockerels for breeding purposes wow butchering the remaining five. I...

Learning the ropes of sneaky chickens

So I've got a fairly new flock of show stock black and blue ameraucana. But it took me nearly 2 weeks to get 3 dozen eggs from 12 hens. Which was pretty low laying rate from what I figured with young hens. 3 weeks ago I lifted the coop to deal with as rodent problem. No eggs under the coop...

    Meet Henry, the Partridge Chantecler

Strangely enough, this guy was at a Rural King in the St Louis area as a chick. Rural King gets their birds from Hoover's Hatchery. I liked his quality enough to order a couple dozen chicks the first of February.

    Sustainable homesteading birds

Thanks for the reply! So there are a couple reasons I have for wanting to cross them. We're located in Missouri, and it's gets kinda silly with weather sometimes. We recently had sub zero temperatures for almost 2 weeks. Anything I had with big combs or wattles experienced some degree of...
