My Barred Rocks are jerks. They don't pick on the other birds too much, but they are so rude when it comes to getting into their preferred roosting spots. I watch one of them on the camera pecking at my Australorps toes and pecking and pulling at her waddles, and I just want to go in there and...
My chickens have just started laying too. They are 6 months old now. The first layers are the ISA Browns, and one of them dropped her first egg on the poop deck, but then figured out where to lay for the next couple of weeks. Now, this week she is back to laying on the poop deck again. Sunday...
I have Barred Rocks and the best way to tell boys from girls is that the boys will have white on their heads and no shadowing on their legs and feet. The girls will have grey on their heads with shadowing on their legs and feet. Both of your Barred Rocks look exactly like my pullets looked when...
My Australorps came from Hoovers too, and they both had/still have white muffs. I have noticed that they are getting darker as they are getting older. Mine were hatched on May 24th. I also agree that yours is a hen. From what I have researched on Australorps is that the little roos get really...
I have Black Australorps too. Mine are 7 weeks old now. The combs on the cockerels come in red early on. I would guess that pics 1,2 and 3 are cockerels. Pic 4 looks like my pullets. I hope that helps.

I have two black Australorps that are 7 weeks old today. I've done a lot of reading about how to tell if they are hens or roos. From what I have read the Austrolorp roos show red combs and wattles very early. My Australorps have pale combs at no wattles at all right now. I'm thinking that your...
We’re building an 8x12 Woods Fresh Air Coop. This is our progress so far. I want to thank everyone who has built this type of coop and posted here. We never would have gotten this far without this resource. We have 8 chicks waiting to move in. More updates to follow.
