Normally yes, they won't start laying till next spring. But it's not out of the question. It's been known for them to start early and lay a couple in the fall. They are fascinating/smart/independent creatures!
Do you have a female that could be on a nest? Does he have a mate at all? My gander went too long being a single man. He was obsessed with me cause I was his only chance at a mate. He's currently separated from my female because he's far too aggressive with her and attacks her and rips her...
I don't think so. They're very territorial. If they don't want you around their space they'll become aggressive. It's usually only when there are eggs or goslings they're protecting. Is there any chance you have a nest hidden somewhere? Everything I've read says to leave them be and give them...
Ouch! Those don't look like they tickled! My gander was raised by a woman so he attacks men. My female was hand raised by me. We spent MANY hours bonded and she was VERY attached. Now that she's grown and lives outdoors I can't even get near her without her running away. I think eventually their...
I would try a rake and shoo him off with it. Make him scared of it. That way you have something to defend yourself with, but it also won't hurt him. It's my only choice sometimes.
I feel you though, mine have brought me to frustration tears many times.
I'm not sure about age, but I'm not surprised considering the rapid rate geese grow. When a gander is mating with a female, he will grab at the back of her neck/feathers. It's a way of holding on and having control.
I'm not sure I can be of any help since I personally just avoid sitting in one spot to avoid his attempts. Instead we go for little walks. I'll wonder around the yard in small stretches (keep just a step or two ahead of him) and he will follow me in hopes to mate. I figure this way he gets his...
Don't ask me why, but yes ganders will try to mate with you. My gander "adores" me and during mating season, I keep my distance. He'll follow me everywhere but anytime he gets too close, I just step away. I'm hoping his new female will change that this coming spring, but I doubt it.
I do...
1am an I could hear Baby hissing from all the way inside the house. Figured that had to mean something, maybe a snake was in his pen. Walk all the way out there to find a skunk chilling in his house eating his food. And Baby just stands there hissing at him. So I let Baby loose before he got...
I envy your ability to get your geese back into their shelter. Mine are near impossible. I can somewhat coax my gander into getting close enough to pick him up. My female on the other hand is impossible and will run from me (it takes 2 people and a dog to herd her in). Which is weird because she...
