This never ends. First it was coccdia my first season, then stupid daytime predators, now this pecking junk!
One of my light brahmas was pecked to death a month ago.
Gusto, my RIR pullet had a funny hairdo on Sunday and when I looked, her feathers were pulled up because of the blood - her...
If you want to keep the chickens in lay, you do need to keep it warmer and provide more light for them. Once the days get shorter, it cues the hens to go into moult, but you can trick them with heat and light. This can be bad though if not in the proper ratio as too much light has been known...
Per the vet's instructions, Pogo should be in a pen for her safety from predators. I am looking to find a home where Pogo can happily live out his/her days in a fenced in chicken yard. I could build a pen, but it may not be as large as a pen you all may have.
I sexed her as a her, but her...
Thank goodness I'm not alone! My 6 week old cochin has been biting me the past few days. She'll just run up to me and bite me on the foot or hand when I enter the coop (6x10). She's free range too. She used to ride on my shoulder, now she bites me...I know how skittish you all feel! I've...
She is doing well. I noticed that she has had several loose bowl movements though. I assume that is from the trauma she went through yesterday. She is on an antibiotic for a week. She has been hopping around and even hopped over to my hand and sat in it for a while. I hated to put her down...
She's now resting in her dog crate with her sister. It was sweet. I went down to switch over the laundry and the two girls were cuddling. I wonder if she knows Pogo is hurt - usually each chick sleeps away from each other. Pogo did stand up, then lost her balance and got her wing wet. Poor...
I will certainly post updates. This may then be able to help others with this same issue. Pogo woke up just fine and I'm heading over to the vet in a few minutes to pick her up.
Update on Pogo:
I took her in this morning to see Dr. Faegans at Watson Road Animal Hospital. Wonderful people there - absolutely love what they do and they do it well!!! Dr. Faegans told me about simply making her a one legged chicken. She said she had a polish needing to have a leg...
Update: Retaped her legs with bandaid again and wiped off her hock on her right leg. It was yellowish and the crust came off in one piece. There was yellowish white stuff underneath. Not sure if pus or bone or combination.
Could her Achilles tendon be the issue? See...
My Jersey Giant chick has had a swollen hock for nearly two weeks. I thought it was spraddle leg and treated with the bandaid brace. Her leg was directly behind her and now it's to the side after 1.5 weeks of the bandaid treatment. She still doesn't walk often and seems to not be feathering...
My two adopted hens have the best manners. They're 3 years old - I felt sorry for them being all alone at the feed store where they were abandoned. I was worried about the temperament of the chickens, but other than being skittish, they're pretty polite. They wipe their beaks at the door of...
That's the #1 reason why I won't ship. I waited to ship a rooster last year until we were going to have a cool couple of weeks (70s max). The person bought him in July and didn't get him until September, but he arrived perky and alive.
I'm about 2 hours from Hannibal.
