    Safely Preserving Garlic in Oil

While browsing through Youtube the other day, I ran across a video on how to safely preserve chopped garlic in oil. Because of the risk of botulism, I've always been leery of instructions that saved chopped garlic in oil either in the refrigerator or the freezer. In reading the description of...

    What are you canning now?

I also have the victorio steam canner. It's the only BWB canner I use now. So much faster & safer than a huge pot full of boiling water. I can even stack a 2nd row of half pint jars so I can get 16 jars in one batch. It holds 7 quart jars...

Grandpa's Treadle feeder vs. chicken condo feeder

I really like the idea of padding the door flap. Mine is so loud I can hear it in the mornings when the chickens start feeding before I wake up. I think I have a piece of foam rubber that I can use. I'll give it a try tomorrow. Just to change the topic a little bit, I have 3 dogs, Zeva, a 95...

    Washed Eggs left unrefrigerated

Thanks for all the info on brooder lamps. I had no idea! I have some plant heating mats that I use for seed starting in the winter. I have the thermostat to keep the temperature constant. Since these are waterproof, I think I'll use them the next time I have baby chicks.

    Washed Eggs left unrefrigerated

You mean you don't need a brooder/heat lamp for chicks? before I got my first chicks, I read several books & websites by "experts." They all said heat was vital. Tell me if they're wrong or not?

    Washed Eggs left unrefrigerated

With my first batch of chickens about 6 years ago, the first treat I ever gave them was chopped leftover Kentucky Fried Chicken. They loved it!! My girls regularly get chicken & turkey carcasses , and like ericstac said, will pick them clean. I feed cracked eggs (cooked) back to my girls all...

    What are you canning now?

The avery website makes it so easy. You can save the design so the next time you need it, you can just pull it up. It's works wonderfully for me.

    What are you canning now?

I use avery.com to print my labels. I use a size 2x4 inches for the sides. For the fruit I'm using, I do a google search, or Bing, for strawberry clip art. I like to use drawings / clip-art for the images instead of photos. When I find an image I like, I save it to my computer and then import...

We do the same thing with the funny names. We have a Swamp Pop, and a Watermelon Crawl. I also put funny pictures on the labels for the kind of jam it is. This is the picture that's on our Strawberry Jam:

    What are you canning now?

I have a small stand selling my jams & jellies at a local farmers market. I'm running low on a lot of things so this week is a major jelly making week. So far this week I've made Grape Jelly, Sugar Free Grape Jelly, Cherry Jam, Sugar Free Cherry Jam, Crawfish Jelly and Thai Pepper Jelly. I still...

Grandpa's Treadle feeder vs. chicken condo feeder

lynnehd, I did put my feeder on pavers. My problem was is that I have alfalfa hay in the covered run & the chickens kept scratching the hay under the treadle and it wouldn't go down. Since then, my girls have eaten all the hay, so that's no longer an issue. But even without the hay, I think...

    Egg sellers?

Just like Ol Grey Mare said - it depends on your location. From what I've seen, more rural areas have a sales price of $2-$3. I'm in New Orleans. Craigslist advertising for about $3-$4. Farmers markets range from $5-$7, again depending on the area of the city. More upscale locations are selling...

    Semi-Automatic Chicken Door

I needed something to let my chickens out in the morning & shut them in at night. The fully-automatic chicken doors were just too expensive for me. Here's what my hubby came up with. With supplies from local recycling stores, we got a plastic track that's for attaching siding, and a plastic...

Grandpa's Treadle feeder vs. chicken condo feeder

Since my feeder is located inside a covered run, I'm not if it's waterproof or not. If I were to put it outdoors, I'd build a covering over it. Jo-Ann

Grandpa's Treadle feeder vs. chicken condo feeder

I purchased a large size Feed-O-Matic feeder about 10 weeks ago. I love it!! It took the girls about 2 days to figure out the treadle feeder, but now it's no problem. The biggest benefit is far less wasted food. I had a whole flock of sparrows who had discovered free food. Before this feeder...
