Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

My 26 week old BCMs have just begun laying. The eggs are small and very dark. However, one hen has been "laying" from her roost, which is about three feet off the floor of the coop. She has laid three perfect, very dark eggs. Then, today, I found a small, thin-shelled egg that was the color of...

Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I just got a Black Copper Marans cockerel and two pullets. They're just for pretty, but I'm so excited to have such beautiful, rare birds!

How long before eggs are safe?

We get ours from an organic farm. I'm super picky about all our food. Thank you for commenting! I'm thinking a couple weeks would be best, too.

How long before eggs are safe?

I rescued some chickens from a not very nice place. I have no idea what they were fed there. How long should I wait before eating their eggs? I'm letting them free-forage, with some extra protein to help them re-grow their feathers.

    Funky Feet on Non-Roosting Orps

They have several lower to the gound wooden structures to perch on, as well as 12-14 inches of pine shavings on the floor. It's just that wide boards make coop cleanup harder and more frequent.

    Funky Feet on Non-Roosting Orps

I made a chicken rescue on Friday, and now have a beautiful buff Orpington rooster with three buff Orp hens and a buff Rock(?) hen. They are pitiful looking. The Orp hens have almost no feathers on their backs and "shoulders." The Rock is a bit bedraggled, but looks much better. They all have...

Rooster and Hens in South Central Kentucky

I need new chickens, but don't want to raise chicks. I'd really like a standard rooster and four hens. I'm located in South Central Kentucky.

    Lost a Bunny Today :(

I lost a lop today. When I went out to check the rabbit hutches this morning, she had burrowed her head into one corner and she was barely alive. I brought her inside to check her over and see if she could be saved. She has no marks on her, no blood and nothing else seemed unusual. She was very...

    Is Meyer Hatchery very good?

I'm sorry to hear so many folks have had problems with Meyer. In early November, I ordered three bantam Welsummers, with a meal maker that ended up being a barred rock pullet, and they came during a hard cold snap -- below freezing. All thrived. This is my second order. The first order -- 25...

    Angora Rabbits -- Badly Matted

Oh, everything you wrote makes sense! In fact, I have Liquid Bandage on hand, just in case. I'm taking it slow, which helps with my patience and I think keeps the bunnies from being too stressed. Thank you!

Bunny Folks -- What Kind of Angoras?

Interesting! I didn't think they looked like any of the pure angora breeds. Makes sense!
