Not knowing how my new mare trailers, I decided I wanted to tow my trailer to the barn and park it there for a month or two so I could practice with her. I hadn't used it since I moved my two late retirees three years ago, it's just been parked in the grass next to my driveway ever since I got...
Aw, thank you! I feel like I'm monopolizing this thread with all my horsey musings, hope nobody minds. I should at least take pictures! Especially now that she's started to lose a bit of her brood-mare/hay belly (wish I could say the same for myself!)
Today's ride was very brief, just because the gnats and flies were driving both of us crazy! Her grooming took longer than usual, because she had horrible bot-fly eggs ALL over her legs, flanks and girth area. Yuck, I hate those things. After scraping them off and spraying her with fly-spray...
OMG! At the time, I never thought about her attempting to jump the gate, but as I'm getting to know her better, a nice girl but an opinionated chestnut mare who tends to be one step ahead of me, jumping the gate would be something she might try to do!
Had so much fun riding my new mare today, with a few challenges, LOL!
A few other horses were working in the giant arena at the same time, which she likes.
She's 26 years old, so we do a really lengthy warmup, waking forward and relaxed all around the giant arena on a loose rein in both...
Thank you, you're SO right about the sad!
Having a lovely new horse to ride definitely takes part of the sting away. Since we're still getting to know each other, I'm full of plans about what to work on next, analyzing what different exercises can improve us, arranging for lessons - keeping busy...
That's the kind of lesson I want! Yell at me about my position, make me sweat. Just to get my balance, fitness and independent seat back, it's the fastest way. But I can't find a trainer who will do that.
I know, the cost, we feel guilty but let's be real - it is a definite factor and makes a...
I didn't want to quit riding, but was dreading shopping for a new horse! Discussing business things with the barn owner, like, "it's not the end of the month, how much do I still owe, minus hay? I know you can't save my stall, but can you keep me at the front of the waiting list? Can I keep my...
Well, sadly, this summer I had to say goodbye to my two oldsters.
Komet my former eventer was 31, with Cushing's, cataracts and arthritis. He finally got to the point where he couldn't get up and down in spite of pain medication, his rear suspensory ligaments could not support him any more. He...
I started volunteering at a hippotherapy barn a few months ago, with the intention of taking care of the horses since that's what I love and have a lot of experience with. Turns out, they have a huge need for people to help out with therapy sessions for the clients, and though I have very little...
