THIS. I am a 6'2" man. I had one rooster who use to be really friendly as a chick and cockerel, but then started to attack me when he was mature. He never attacked head on. Always sneaky attacks from the side or behind.
One time I turned around because I knew he was about to attack. He was...
I did not get chickens to save money on eggs.
I just had this strange desire to have chickens.
I cannot explain this desire. It first hit me when I was living in a big city and my lot was just over 3000 sq/ft, which meant that I really did not have a yard.
I left the city and within a few...
One of my ideas to give a chicken run extra security is to use a solar powered electric fence as the outside perimeter.
Basically my idea is to attach the plastic wire holders to the enclosure posts. Have something on the ground to prevent weeds and grass from growing under where the wire is...
I failed chicken math.
I have a hen that has gone broody two years in the row. Last year I let her hatch the eggs, but this year, I tried to prevent it. I took her eggs, tried locking her out of the coop during the day.
Then things got busy and she ended up sitting and hatching a single egg.

I went to Tractor Supply today and saw their Cochin chicks there. They were significantly smaller than my chick, so maybe because I have nothing but my full grown chickens,to compare to, it looks tiny.
Thanks for the update. I love when I can read the entire story.
Too many times people post questions and then never update the thread.
Too bad the homemade incubator fritzed out but congratulation on getting at least 3 of the eggs hatched.
They are still in the homemade incubator?
And you're getting them to pip?
Wow. Congratulations!!
What happened to the replacement incubator from Amazon?
I was reading this thread with great interest.
I have a 10 day old chick that I think may be behind the curve. Unfortunately, my broody only got to hatch one egg, so I cannot compare this chick to its siblings.
I did too but I am maxed out on my chicken allowance and don't have the desire to experiment.
Honestly, I seriously doubt that the shape of the egg could be used to determine the gender.
It worked out that way for me.
Out of 10 eggs that went into the incubator, I got 9 males and 1 female.
Out of 9 chicks hatched by the hen, I got 6 males and 3 females.
Your results may vary. LOL
