I know this is an old post, but just in case someone comes across it while looking for information - I had to give an injured rooster antibiotics and followed someone's suggestion to use coconut oil.
Mix the antibiotic powder into about 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil.
Then put that mixture into a...
At first I thought maybe you have an egg thief, but then I went back to your original post and see that you have 16 hens. That would eliminate an egg thief.
Someone suggested it's seasonal but you're in North Florida so I doubt that has anything to do with it. I'm is Southern Texas and my hens...
Thank you. He was. I've had multiple roosters which were great, including the cockerel stage.
I only had 2 bad roosters.
I have only a single rooster right now and I am not too pleased with him. I will give him a bit more time, but I do have two 6 week old cockerels who come from a great...
So I just lost a great rooster few weeks ago.
He lived with only 2 hens in one of two coops in the backyard. He lost his life protecting the girls after a fox got into the backyard.
What I notice after he is gone is that his girls lost a leader. When he was alive, they would be in the coop...
I wash dirty eggs. I fill my sink with warm water, put the eggs in for a minute or two and then run warm water in the other sink and use my thumbs to clean the eggs under the running water.
Then I put the egg on a towel or paper towel as I start on the next egg.
I let them air dry a few minutes...
Possum took your chicken?
Sorry to hear that.
Do you have proof?
I am not doubting. It just that many people say that possums do not kill chickens.
Few years ago, an animal killed one of my hens and then a couple of weeks later a possum was spotted inside their coop.
I dispatched it with a...
Thank you NatJ and apologies to Homo sapien if I hijacked your thread.
However, I do think that it is pertinent to your original question and perhaps NatJ can enlighten both of us with an answer to it.
(I am very curious).
Apparently, a barred rooster with a single barred gene can produce a none barred offspring. That would solve my question above.
It may also be a clue as to how your girl got labeled as barred rock. Their rooster, like mine, is not a pure barred rock.
If a barred rooster always passes on the barring, how did I get my black hen?
There were 3 hens and 1 rooster in my flock and yet I got a black hen out of the mating.
