It has worked out! She saw the vet and he said that she released a yolk early because the implant was starting to work. Because it released early the yolk was small so the egg was small and apparently if the egg is too small it can fail to trigger the calcification process which is at least...
What happened with your bird in the end?
My pet bantam had a pretty serious surgery and then we were planning on getting her the Suprelorin implant but she started laying about a week before the scheduled appointment and we’ve been scrambling ever since.
We took her in when it looked like she...
The bath method is great but I definitely wouldn’t use it for more than a handful of birds. We’ve had pretty good luck with permethrin, it was even easier than the ivermectin because we used the dunk method. Hopefully you find something that works.
Sorry to hear about your turkey baby, although...
I’ve now used ivermectin as a preventative measure now but the birds were low risk to begin with. I’m pretty sure it works on lice regardless of their diet. Normally we’ve used permethrin but I didn’t want to have that stench in the house and I was treating my indoor birds. Ivermectin stinks too...
A little extra information, despite having siblings from the same hatch, they were not raised together so there was no competition between them. This little one was rejected by the foster mom because she likes to pick at any foreign object on her babies and this baby had umbilical gunk for a...
Has anyone ever seen a lump like this?
I noticed that one hip was more prominent when this bird was little but I didn’t think it was anything serious but now I’m worried by how big it seems to be getting. It’s definitely the source of their wry tail and it does seem to affect how they walk...
I found this thread:
https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/ivermectin-pour-on-dosage.727707/
I thought it was very helpful but I want to make sure I fully understand what I’m doing so I’m starting my own.
I’m treating chickens for lice. I have “Ivermectin Pour-on for Cattle 5mg/mL, USP”
Not...
I have a friend in the US who’s really missing her pet hen and has been searching for a similar cross ever since. I just so happened to produce a very similar bird accidentally but I live in Canada and I’m wondering if there’s any way to send eggs or chicks from the same parents to her. How do...
I was able to confirm that the chick’s eyes have basically always been like that so false alarm 😮💨
I found an old picture of dad and he had pretty pale eyes too as well as the eye gap that I think you guys mean when you say swelling, but there were also two new chicks introduced the same day as...
Just got this picture from a friend who hatched some of my birds eggs and just as I was thinking that the eyes looked really pretty, I remembered that Marek’s can cause something that looks like this. The other chicks still have blue/green eyes but nothing like this. I’ve never seen eyes this...
3/5 hatched on the due day. We lost one, and the other had some complications but seems to be doing better now. Hopefully it will be well enough soon and be able to join the rest of its siblings
Teacup baby 🥰
Some extra details about what I’ve done so far.
The yolk wasn’t very big so it didn’t take too long to absorb but I got a “band-aid non-stick pad” and put it in a teacup with a tapered rim to restrict movement. Stuff I read online recommended a damp paper towel and a coffee mug. I put the cup...
I have a chick that didn’t fully absorb their yolk before hatching. It was just a little bit so I found some similar posts online and followed the advice there with my own tweaks and the little one is looking pretty good now but I want to know what else can go wrong at this point and what I can...
Wonderful! I’ll just keep letting it drop for now.
I have a broody with a pair of early siblings sitting on an empty egg so I can slip them under her when they hatch. She’s being a great mama, I can’t wait to see her with a tiny army 🥰
