    How long do chickens live?

I know this is a pretty open ended ?, but we have 9 golden comets. 2 in the last week seem to be noticeably weaker than the rest. we separated them and started antibiotics. the other girls were harrassing them, pecking at them, one had its comb torn or at least damaged by this.they aren't laying...

    mash vs. crumbles

Hi, Cindy, we have a 5 gallon bucket with 4 2" holes on the bottom attached to a feed pan for a feeder. we've used crumbles since the beginning, not having any problems. i was just wondering if there was a good - better- best type of thing with the different feeds. our feeder is somewhat...

    mash vs. crumbles

what's the difference between mash and crumbles. we have 14 layers and 1 roo, all enclosed together. always fed crumbles til this past week when i found a feed store that made their own feed, cheaper! thought i hit on something great, but noticed first of all, 50 lbs. of mash is not the same as...

    Drop in egg production?

IMO, It has to do with light. I had a drop in production too with 15 layers. It went to 1-2 day. put a red heat lamp in the coop at nite and after about a week it started to pick back up to almost 8-9/day. now if I could figure out how to make them stop eating the eggs......

Spring chickens - do they normally lay through the first winter with no extra light?

WE HAD THE SAME PROBLEM HERE. EGG PRODUCTION DROPPED TO NEAR ZERO AROUND DECEMBER. LAST YEAR OUR 1ST YEAR BIRDS (GC) REALLY DIDN'T MISS A BEAT LAYING. I HAD A RED HEAT LIGHT ON ALL NITE ALSO. THIS YEAR WE ADDED 6 BSL, STARTED LAYING IN THE SUMMER WITH THE OTHERS THEN ALL LAYING SLOWED IN DEC. I...

    Artificial light and egglaying

welcome to byc eggs in alaska! -45.... that's COLD! We had 0 degrees this weekend and our first real snow of the season. it is late, but ok with me. the chickens had it easy here so far. last year we had 8 or so feet by now. looks more like red light might be a way to go. give a bit of heat and...

    Artificial light and egglaying

Last year was the golden comets first winter, this is first winter for bsl. I put a heat lamp (red) in there last winter cause i felt bad. thought, after having a year and a half under me, knowing a little more they would do just fine without the little bit of added warmth. now, almost no eggs...

    Artificial light and egglaying

Does the color of the artificial light make any difference? I don't have any light in the coop now, and our egg production is next to zero with 14 layers ( 5 BSL and 9 Golden Comets). Last year we put a red heat lamp in the coop and it was almost like they never missed a beat laying. I could put...

No I Did Not Know That. Would D.e. Be A Better Solution? Honestly, I Don't Know If They Have Worms Ay All. This Is Just For Prevention. How Do You Know For Sure If They Have Worms? Had 1 Golden Comet Act Lethargic Almost Looked Sleepy And Not Spunky For Treats 1 Day, Then Was Normal The Next...
