It's hard to say for certain if they're all hers so far, they look like they could be! She's an Australorp and our Rooster is a Barred Rock. All the chicks are black with bits of white. We have another Australorp and a BSL so they would have black chicks too... I'm not sure what the chics would...
We keep free-range chickens that just go in the coop at night so it's important to us to have a fairly protective rooster. Oreo is a fantastic protector of his ladies and treats them all well. He's fought off the neighbor's cat, a fox, and a hawk so far that we've seen. The downside to that is...
Ours doesn't crow that much but otherwise sounds just the same! Our kiddo is 12 so all of us are kinda okay with his aggressiveness but it can be a pain. He's a great protector of the ladies though (he's beaten off the neighbor's cat, a fox and a hawk so far) so we let him stay. We free-range so...
I love my Australorp hens! They're beautiful and so soft. Both are friendly and don't mind attention. One of them likes to crawl into my husband's lap and snuggle regardless of what he's doing or if he's in the mood for chicken love. They get along well with everyone else in our mixed flock...
@Trevorusn
I'm sorry to hear about your BSL :( It's funny how much I get used to watching them out in the field every day and then miss them if one disappears! How long has yours been gone? Peck was missing for about 26 days when she turned back up.
@Peppercorngal
My husband built me this coop because I wanted a handful (maybe 6-7) hens and roo to hang out on the farm and eat bugs and leftover veggies and leave me some fresh eggs! I didn't anticipate tripling the flock overnight! lol We do have another coop where mama has decided to...
@Ridgerunner
Thank you for all of your input! We are managing our flock a lot like you did growing up from the sounds of it. We do keep scratch grains mixed with laying pellets in the coop but we have land and a pond and they spend most of the days foraging and eat very little from their...
She truly did pick the best spot in the barn to make a next. We found her hide-out last night and the only way to her and her babes means getting past the donkeys! I did put starter and water out for them yesterday so we’re good on that part!
Oh, I forgot! We do have a pig, too! I try to forget him because he's kiddo's 4-H project and I hate when we have market animals and have to say farewell so soon.
HomesteaderWife, she's a black duck! lol She was in a clearance tank at the farm store and we got her and a white one, Daisy, but Daisy didn't make it through the year. I'm not sure of the breed for either of them. Unfortunately Daisy was the one and only bird we've had that found out why...
Lady of McCamley, thank you for all of your input! My rooster is really docile with us but he does put a quick stop to the ladies pecking and fighting with each other and he's aggressive with other animals. So far we've seen him fight off a hawk and a neighbors cat when they came near his girls...
