Will LED light be fine for supplemental light? I read that it will be but mainly curious on the lumens.
Also, I understand you should add the light gradually? Say 15 minutes extra a day until you are up 14-16 hours? I hear this is better than blasting them with 5-6 extra hours of light all at...
I think I have a new problem that just occurred to me.
My shed has power to it. Where I want to put the charger is inside. So I can plug it in easily. My plan is to run the power wire and ground out the bottom of the shed then down the fence line out to where the poultry netting is gonna go...
This what I got coming. I likely need to hit up TSC for some ground rods, and maybe corner anchors, such as a wood post or two and maybe some extra plastic/fiberglass stakes so the net isn’t floppy. But I think this should work out fine.
No it wouldn’t. But I’m not going to do that. My coop (8x10 in size) sits right next to my storage shed which has an outside plug. It would be easier to put the charger in there, within a lil box or something so chicken poo don’t engulf it in a matter of hours, and run the power to the fence...
Not sure yet. I’m either going to have to get the solar powered charger or plug a long extension cord to the power supply, which is not ideal at all. I’ve had good luck with the solar power Ring camera so I may go that route with the charger. I also have a lot of rock where I will be making the...
I want to expand my run for the winter months and beyond. Right now it’s 6ft tall welded wire. Roughly 14x30 maybe, I can’t recall. But I want to expand it because I’ve added 17 more chickens and things over the winter will simply turn in to a muddy mess. I hate that. I HATE THAT.
I can pick...
I just hatched 17 chicks. I’m hoping at least half are hens. So I’m going to expand the run out to the pasture. Going to give them at least 50x60 with plenty of shade and roosts.
I notice the word “decent” added in there. But I still disagree that it’s the bare minimum.
Adding to the list you would include exercise and a rooster?? And then where would the list be in your opinion with those 2 added? No longer the bare minimum I would presume.
Yeah I think over time he would get used to them being in the yard. But that initial “getting used to” would mean him chasing them around until he gets that out of his system. I just don’t want to put that stress on the birds, even for a day or whatever. I’ve introduced 3 kittens to him over the...
If I didn’t have a dog that would harass them I would free range my flock. Putting the dog in a pen is not an option. The dog takes priority over the chickens when it comes to free range of the yard. And it’s not a case of the dog would kill them, he would just chase them and want to play with...
My chickens are in a coop & run 24/7 so yes, my suggestions/ideas are specific to my conditions. I don’t vaccinate my birds but I have heard that adding a little apple cider vinegar to the water does something for them. I’ve only done that once a long time ago with a different flock. I feel like...
Same questions as @Holdthechicken for @JacinLarkwell
You suggesting if they are getting oyster shell then layer feed is not needed? Just table scraps/flock raiser? Treats every now and then?
Greetings all!
I’ve kept, raised, hatched, sold, etc, for 5 years now. And before then I’ve got my knowledge from several generations of family that have done the same. And this wonderful place of course :)
Raising and keeping healthy chickens is more involved than simply collecting eggs...
