I probably should wear a mask all the time but after the pandemic and mask requirements, I avoid them as much as possible. When I do a deep clean, I make an exception. When the task is done, the mask is black inside and out.
My chickens all easily reach the nests and have a platform to stand on before going in. The one in the smaller room often has a line of chickens waiting to use it. It's hilarious to watch.
I have 6 nests. Five in the big room and one in the small room. I have 25 chickens. 24 hens and 1 rooster. I also have 2 dust bins. As you can see, the one in the smaller room needs more in it but it was in use at the time. The egg layer for outside usually drops it in the big run about 5 feet...
Thank you all for your comments. I feel much safer now. I keep the 'ground bound' ones in my fridge (after washing). I only sell clean unwashed ones. 'Ground bound' never make the cut. :)
I would LOVE to break the laying in the dirt pattern but have no idea how to go about it. Any suggestions would be greatly welcome! I also have no idea which of my ladies is doing this. I have one solid suspect but no concrete evidence.
I have one or two chickens who like to lay their eggs on the ground/in dirt. I'm ok with them laying in the dust bin because it is inside. But I'm finding the occasional egg in the run where it is exposed to the rain we are having. When I find it it is cold, filthy, and wet. Is this egg still...
I have 24 hens and one rooster. They have a large run and spacious coop. 17 of the hens are 2-3 months older than the newest six. The older ones have always been in the run. The six were 4 months old when I got them and were free range. All are laying now but 2 of them prefer to lay anywhere but...
My daughter and I were looking at all the different scratch options on the market. I want to feed my chickens a good scratch without breaking the bank. What should a good scratch contain? What things should I make sure it doesn't contain? I have been feeding one from our Grange Cooperative...
They have had this red light for a week now. Tonight, at ya'll urging, I turned it off. It wasn't completely dark outside so they had a little light through their two windows. They didn't fuss at all!!! I had coop prep jobs still to do and when I closed the small door they started fussing but...
My mother in law started them off in her house and NEVER turns the TV off. They got used to at least a little light at night. When they moved into my home because they outgrew their brooder, they would go crazy in the night and not rest unless I left a light on. I brought the light with them...
Yes. It is a regular bulb. It is actually a 1W LED non breakable bulb to put a little light in the coop at night. There are no leaks. I have checked. The roof coating I applied this summer (three coats) is working perfectly. The clamp is VERY stiff and is holding so tight that I can't move it...
I put in a piece of linoleum that I roll up during the day and out at night. I don't like that they stomp around on it before the doors open but they do also kick bedding on it. Clean up takes me 5-10 minutes. Now my least favorite job but SO worth it! I have 19 birds and them make a LOT of...
