I figured I’d give an update in case anybody encounters a similar health issue. The chick unfortunately just passed away.
I suspected the chick had omphalitis/yolk sac infection/mushy chick syndrome due to a very dark coloration on his abdomen. I applied antibiotic ointment to his navel and...
I’ve also given him sugar water, but I’m nervous to continue doing so if he’s unable to breathe correctly. Could he have injured his windpipe or have deformed lungs from hatching?
My newly hatched pheasant chick never made a peep during the hatching process, and continues to be silent the next day. He will tilt his head up and make gasping motions with his beak as if he’s struggling to breathe. Occasionally a very small, very strangled sounding cheep will make it out of...
As an update, I’m suspecting that one of them may actually be a female. Their beak is significantly darker than the other two and they spend a lot of time preening or pecking at the others. What do you guys think?
My mandarin ducklings have been in their aviary for about a week now, and are growing fast. I don’t know how old they were when I purchased them last month, but I think it’s possible to sex them now. I’m thinking they’re all male, but one of them does have a duller beak than the other 2. Any...
Thanks, I was worrying about that too. I had lights running normally during winter, but maybe the lack of UVB/natural lighting is why he’s molting early?
The nesting box I ordered for my pair of mandarins arrived today, very happy with the quality of it. Ignore the purple one on the right, my cousin wanted to try making one herself out of cardboard. ;)
I’m a bit confused as to whether or not the ramp I’ve added (since my birds wings are...
A duckling I hatched today has this same issue. Originally I thought it was just egg membrane sticking to her eyelids, but they have the same white glaze/film as your duck, and in the same position in the eye.
My mandarin duck pair arrived 2 days ago. Their outdoor enclosure isn’t quite ready yet so they’re being kept in a renovated horse stall (added a small pool, tree limbs, and lots of hiding places)
They seem to be settling in, but I can’t tell if they’re eating, and it has me worried. I’m...
Silkies are a favorite breed of many, including me. They’re just downright adorable, and there truly isn’t another breed like them. Their feathers feel like fur to the touch and they can be quite cuddly— for a chicken, at least.
I would say their friendly and docile demeanor is most likely...
I butchered my very first chicken today, and it took me around an hour and a half from start to finish. Definitely was a lot more difficult than I thought, but now I know what to do next time. :barnie
I periodically hosed down the chicken with cold water while I worked, but I’m curious if it’s...
Thank you so much. I just moved them into a different bator set at 97.5, it’s on the high end but I figured it’s better to avoid having a massive temperature fluctuation.
Yesterday I purchased some emu eggs and set them in my incubator at 97 F. Today I replaced the thermometer in my incubator and it’s reading 99.5 F. I bought another one just to make sure, and it’s definitely 99.5 F.
If I lower the temperatures now by such a large amount, will it kill the egg...
PayPal told me I’ll be able to get my money back in a few days, since 10 days will have elapsed since I’ve opened the case without a response from the seller. :bow
