Before you toss in the towel, take a peek at some of the other frostbite threads! Apparently the vast majority of birds who lose toes and even feet seem to readily adapt. Maybe they should avoid free ranging but as long as they're (seemingly) happy and pain/infection free, a wait and see...
Do you have a roo in with them?? If so, if he is aggressive with them or simply insatiable, then these things do happen... If that's the case, a chicken saddle will do the trick and keep their backs safe from the ravages of his "attention".
Let me know how the prosthetics work out!My handsome roo, Checkers, suffered frostbite and we're pretty sure he's going to lose both feet, luckily at the same spot on each leg. I'm debating a set of prosthesis for him as well. My question is more about how to keep them clean and sterile...
So Checkers is my *big* barred rock roo...Initially there was no plan of keeping him and he had been destined for the stewpot. Long story short, every time we had the time to cull and butcher, it began to rain. This gave our boy just enough time to prove himself as a sweetheart with a 1 ton...
I think I might have a hermaphrodite on my hands too! Just expanded the flock and one Welsummer was definitely a roo. Aggressively mounting, spurring and fluffing neck feathers at another roo (destined for the "freezer camp" as well... He/she has spurs and crows. Well I separated him/her into a...
Do you have stoats in your area? We have them occasionally in my area of WV and they will often kill just for the fun of it. One stoat could easily take out a whole flock. How wide is the mesh on their wire and are there any signs of breakage or digging under?
Dang it!!! Really thought I would make this one, but I have drill for the Air National Gusrd this weekend. Ah well... Next time. Also, if anyone has any Americauna, copper maran, or serama hens who will be laying soon or are laying now, I would be very interested in a private message. *hint...
Ok, phew! I have one roo named Checkers and yesterday my sweetie caught him in the act! He was enjoying a little bunny poop buffet under our Flemish giant hutches! He was apparently having the time of his life!
Jefferson County here!!! Hailing from, believe it or not, an HoA neighborhood in Shepherdstown! 2 laying partridge rocks and 4 bantam chicks (and for the moment a barred rock roo - needing rehomed)plus Flemish giant bunnies and a breeding pair of Holland lops! Aaaaand an orchard, large gardens...
Dont think we'll have our Flemish with us, as Sophie's newest litter won't be weaned yet, but might be a nice day to just walk around and enjoy! Our new coop will (hopefully) be all set to go by then, so a couple ready-to-lay copper marans would definitely top our list! :-D
We just lost a young roo this morning. :( Benedict was about 5-6 weeks old and seemed just fine yesterday, but this morning he was lying stiff in the little spot behind the nesting boxes where he likes to hide. He was from a small brood of day-old bamtams we got at Tractor Supply. So far 3 of...
Thanks for an amazing day! Got a dozen maran hatching eggs and found 3 great homes for 4 of our Flemish giant rabbits. Even got a couple roosters! One is going to need a new home but all in all a great day! :-D
