We are just across the MD/PA border ,so our climate is almost he same.
It depends what the winter season brings, it can be rainy and cold and the chickens will thrive free range, but if we have snow and ice cover they wont don so well.

We really love our Speckled Sussex, got 5 in our last order from Murray McMurray.
One has speckles all over and one is almost speckle free, the rest normal.
They are some-of the sweetest hen's we have.

Panasonic is the only way to go.
You may have to pay for it,you can find good deals on ebay, amazon, ect.
As a homeowner and a business user ,i have tried them all,Dewalt,B&D,Bosch,ect. they all are good but cannot last.
Only the Panasonic have lasted for weeks with no charge, and always out...
Our BLRWs are the sweetest most friendly birds we have ever owned, all six of them. They were purchased from a local breeder at day 4, but raised the same as all of our other birds.

Chipmunk+paintball= skill+luck
We have allot of chipmunks around the house, they really eat our flowers ,veggies.ect.
Our old beagle ,she has taken on chipmunks as a pastime, she get's a few.
If they come close enough why not try a blowgun

Plastic netting above will help protect against hawks.
However your chickens will draw predators of all kinds , best to build a chicken coop/run that is 100% predator proof. Then let them free range when you can.

Barred rocks should be easy to sex after a few weeks. for people the have had barred rocks.

16x16 is a decent run for 15 chickens.
Ill bet you can free range them
Just take care and watch them when you free range them, even if it only 15-45 min when you get home to watch them.
Everybody has there predators , be it a mink fox,fisher,ect.
Fisher's are very nasty, maybe you can trap...
Morel mushrooms are for dinner tonight.
We will do the best mushrooms and saute them in butter and fresh spring onions, then lay them over some home grown steaks.
The rest of the morel mushroom haul will be eaten over a few days, most likely breaded and fried
