    giving pills to chickens?

How I do it is I grab the head (usually someone will be holding her), if you are alone hold your hen between your knees to block them from backing up. Hold their head with one hand and use your other hand holding the pill and grab the base of her beak. Pry it open and put a finger inside to keep...

Coturnix Quail foot BROKEN OFF - ADVICE NEEDED

Keep an eye on the coloration. Swelling can mean a multitude of things but because of the circumstances I would worry about an inner infection that could occur in the wound when it has healed over. Is it squishy inside? Does it feel like fluid is maybe trapped inside her leg or does it just feel...

Coturnix Quail foot BROKEN OFF - ADVICE NEEDED

Use both! Clean with vertricyn then apply with triple antibiotic ointment. The generic one from Walgreens works very well and is one I have used on multiple occasions. Glad she’s doing ok, very traumatic situation and I hope both of you are able to get through this!

    Things I don't feed my chickens😊

It’s a fine once in awhile treat but bread is a complex carbohydrate molecule that can take quite a long time to digest. Especially for birds since their digestive system definitely doesn’t work the same as ours haha! But because of the complexities of the molecule and the amount of time it...

    Things I don't feed my chickens😊

Mine as well. Wet cat food especially. My oldest hen as of right now isn’t feeling well and it’s ALL she’ll eat unfortunately, alongside some fruits. But it’s helping her feel better because any food for a sick hen is better than no food at all!

Coturnix Quail foot BROKEN OFF - ADVICE NEEDED

Sorry if I missed something but did you amputate the limb? It’s bad but definitely not as bad as her having an entirely broken limb attached to her, so I hope she’s able to heal! Have you been wrapping the wound? I am happy to see that it looks to be clean from infection so far but wrapping it...

    Nonstop crowing! Suggestions?

I may try and drop off some eggs to their house with a small note or something. I obviously cannot bend my rooster into not doing what nature intends, I can only manage it to the best of my abilities. At least some eggs will be appreciated by my neighbor. But my neighbor also has the same...

Coturnix Quail foot BROKEN OFF - ADVICE NEEDED

Cleaning it shouldn’t cause it to start bleeding again as bleeding stops through clotting or scabbing. Things like veterycin and neosporin should be a good bet for now however I am worried that if the leg is very broken you will have to amputate it because I have had a duck with a (unknowingly...

    Nonstop crowing! Suggestions?

Have you had any issues with crow collars?? I just put my baby in his sleeping crate with a sheet and the lights off he got quiet and I let him out, he crowed maybe 4 times and hasn’t anymore so hopefully he’ll be more quiet throughout the day. The funny thing is we are not zoned for geese...

Do Muscovy need a pool to swim in?

They definitely don’t need a pool but it’s good stimuli. Kind of like how cats don’t need toys to live but it provides good mental stimulation. Same for ducks! I had a Muscovy who loved to swim but she’d only swim twice a day :) if you decide to only give them a pool twice a week then that would...

    Nonstop crowing! Suggestions?

The eating thing is definitely a concern. I am a college student and I also free range all my chickens. I can’t always regulate what they’re eating out in the grass. I’ll have to think it over!

Black non bearded Silkie Roo or hen?

Silkies are hard to sex but I’m leaning towards female just from the lack of streamers on the head and small/nonexistent crown. I have a silkie just like this and the first thing he got was streamers and long neck feathers! Here’s my male black silkie about a year and a half old for...

Coturnix Quail foot BROKEN OFF - ADVICE NEEDED

I’m not sure if the foot is savable on your own. Do you have any local poultry vets in your area?? Emergency vets? Treating the wound now to prevent infection is crucial and many other posters have given amazing advice but in the long run you don’t want the foot to heal out of place if it is...

    Nonstop crowing! Suggestions?

He has his own little pen in our garage and also a chicken diaper for some indoor time. Also I’m vegetarian and way to attached to get rid of him now because of a little crowing lol but I was wondering about the crow collar I’m just wary because of all the huge warnings across the forum. 😖 It...

    Nonstop crowing! Suggestions?

I was just surprised by the sudden crow schedule change. Usually he only crows in the morning for as long as he’s been mature but now it’s nonstop and I’m not exactly sure what triggered it 🤔 this is my first rooster and I’m still trying to figure things out

    Nonstop crowing! Suggestions?

I love my 1 year old baby boy silkie but this week he has been crowing like crazyyy! He usually only crows for 30 minutes in the morning and doesn’t crow any more but I think with the warm weather he never shuts up. My only concern is I have new neighbors that I rather not disturb and I usually...

    Unknown illness?

An update for anyone having similar issues with their hen in the future: She had an overgrowth of gram negative bacteria in her crop. So not the traditional sour crop that is an overgrowth of yeast. She was prescribed amoxicillin potassium and seems to be doing good only 3 days after she’s...

    Unknown illness?

I already scheduled an appointment with my local exotic vet. I trust my vet and they’ve been seeing my disabled duck for awhile but I’ll still go ahead and order a dewormer on my own just to be sure! I’m just wary of a bigger issue like possibly gut issues/crop issue that I can’t treat on my own
