    Hatching duck eggs

That does possibly look like an internal pip. But if it’s not moving that’s not good. You could make a tiny safety hole in the shell into the aircell. Just pinhole sized, use a screw or drill bit. If the duckling is alive that will allow it to breathe. You can also do this for any of your other...

    Hatching duck eggs

You can also hold it close to your ear and listen for quiet clicking. When the ducklings internally pip, they start breathing and it sounds like clicking

    Hatching duck eggs

Since it’s day 27, the ducklings get so crowded that it’s sometimes harder to see them move. But they should be starting to internally pip - stick their bills into the aircell. Have you been able to see that? Usually when I have eggs with darkening patches like that, the egg is dead. The only...

Hi, when was the last time you saw signs of life from the patchy dark one? When did it develop the dark spots?

Why are my Pekins not friendly?

I understand about feeling heartbroken that your teenage ducks aren’t the sweet babies they used to be. I’ve had that happen with my last batch of ducklings. One day they decided they wanted nothing to do with me and wouldn’t even eat out of my hand. But the good thing is that didn’t last...

You can leave them in overnight if you want, or transfer them to your brooder. Since they’ve all hatched, you can take them out any time.

This is pretty much what I do too. I’m careful to open and close the incubator quickly, but I won’t hesitate to help as often as needed. My first hatch, out of 29 that survived to lockdown, 28 hatched. 2nd batch, 20 out of 20 survived

    My 2nd Duck Hatch!

Today they get to spend sometime outside in this hardware cloth pen. I don’t think it’s big enough for all 20 so I’m going to set another pen up right next to this one and put 10 in each. Chickpea and Cherry Tomato are watching them closely.

I used a sanitized screw to make the safety holes. I followed the directions in that article I posted. It’s a bit slow but not too difficult

    LOCKDOWN QUESTIONS

I do a safety hole 24 hours after internal pip. From my research, it’s perfectly safe to do that as long as it’s just a pin sized hole. I sometimes even do it earlier than 24 hours if I’m concerned for whatever reason. I know it’s not strictly necessary but it doesn’t hurt, and it gives my...
