    Unexpected Hen Mom

I'm not great with breeds other than silkies, but the farm across the road has Brahmas, and she looks kind of like hers. Hers are quite large.

    Happy to be here --

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow We've got various ages of silkies here, mostly roosters free ranging though, as well as two ducks. They've each got their own coop and know where their home is at night. The farmer across the road has two flocks of chickens, each have a coop, and ducks that...

    Day 21 and no Peeps

So technically today's the day then. I never see mine rock and I've hatched over 500 this year so far. Mine are all silkies so must make a difference when they're smaller, but really no idea. I don't watch them for it though either so if they do, I might be missing it.

    Day 21 and no Peeps

Hi, Helen, and welcome to BYC! What day is this for them? I'm assuming Day 20 or 21? I wouldn't open the incubator up if it's around their hatching time.

Integration(idk why says hatching, meant management sorry)

Hi, and welcome to BYC! So they free-range together, which is good. How far is it from where the younger ones go at night to the coop? One way to do it is lock the younger ones out of their "coop" and put a light inside the chicken door. We have a battery lantern we use. Then just herd them...

Baby chicks keep dying at alarming rate

I did mention just switching to bottled water to eliminate that as being suspect as that's one of the easiest and least expensive things to do.

Disintegrating shell under broody - day 21 of hatch

Wow, so sorry. I thought it sounded good there for a minute. Usually, once they pip, they make it, but this one might have gotten injured when stepped on and crushed like that. You're right though, each of these is a learning experience for sure! You'll be more successful the next time!

Baby chicks keep dying at alarming rate

Hi, and welcome to BYC. I'm sorry about what's going on there with these chicks. I hatch hundreds and hundreds of chicks, and you're doing more than I am with the daily sterilizing. When they're so young like this, it's usually not going to be a disease or illness, albeit coccidiosis when...

Wow! We can't grow those up here, but the way they devoured that, next time I see them on sale in the store, I'm going to get a couple! Amazing!

Disintegrating shell under broody - day 21 of hatch

Agree 1000% with what @Wyorp Rock suggests. When I used to let hens hatch, I had a couple of similar ones and put a thin coat of coconut oil on the membrane, put them in the incubator, jack the humidity up to 70%, and left them alone for 24 hours. One hatched by itself, the other I gave an...
