We have
- 2 adult KC drakes
- 3 growing up SA drakes (not miniature) ... two of which started bobbing their heads at each other at 3 months old ... those are really big, like small geese, stocky body like a barrel, when you pick one up you automatically think "mmm roast duck" even if that was...
Sooo if you separate your drakes .... but there is only a wire fence between them and the ladies (there's not a duck-free space in between) -- does that work? Or are they constantly frustrated trying to cross the fence?
Oh man. OK, I'll think I'll put the 2 adult drakes in drake jail. This will also enable us to bring the grown-up Khaki ladies and all the 2025 kids together. Well, until the young drakes start feeling like drakes :)
We lost a duck yesterday.... Or so we thought.
I came back in the evening from the regular dog patrol and everyduck was OK. An hour later one was missing.
We packed up the others and went looking... With a flashlight... Calling duck-duck-duck...
Nothing in the orchard.
Nothing in the outside...
My only real experience so far was when we merged the previous young group at 3 months, there was 1 young drake vs. 1 adult one, 6 young hens vs. 9 adult ones. Separate houses but common daily grazing area. There were no problems whatsoever.
Right now we have 2 adult drakes, 10 hens; and in the...
It is now June, in July we're merging the adult Khakis and our current generation of Welshies and Appleyards when they turn 3 months old.
We're a bit worried about the small Welshie that's about 2/3 size of a regular one ... One of our Khaki drakes is really a bully.
However -- I've noticed...
Ew OK :) throw some osage orange and gleditsia in there as well
(honey locust I think is the popular name for gleditsia... Good magic plant for anti tractor tires spells)
Sooo this is how it went...
A week ago a guy came in and bought one of our WH drakes. We talked for a while, found out he's still on the lookout for WH and Cayuga hens, I told him we're also looking for more, etc etc...
Today he messages me: hey I found somebody who has our kind of ducks near...
Ahem... I almost fell for a Facebook duck selling scam :)) of all things... details later :) For now, just steer clear of Timothy’s Backyard Livestock.
Happy for you for having got the job!
And sad about your having to turn your life around to such a degree.
Hopefully things will stabilize and you'll find a way to continue doing the things you love in the time that's available.
Sorry to hear that :(
Lower protein food would maybe help in a brute-force way? Since there would simply not be enough "raw materials" to form the egg.
