I've planted peas in the same spot for the last 4 years now and each year they do better. I'm thinking that the mycorrhizal fungi that peas need has built up in the soil in that area and has helped the peas do better. Just my theory.
The snow peas I planted this year are over 5 feet tall, and...
I put so much water into the ground around my tomatoes and peppers that my well couldn't keep up with the volume and the pump shut off. The ground water will replenish in a couple hours. I shouldn't need to water them again in at least a week, maybe two depending on the weather.
I also gave the...
89 degrees, sunny and dry here. The peppers and tomatoes are wilting a little in the heat, so I'll give them a deep watering first thing tomorrow morning. A little stress is good for plants, I think. What doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger.
The beans in the same garden plot are looking great...
I found a new way to control cabbage moths. I gave each of my grandkids a 4 foot long switch from a tree branch and told them I'd give them a quarter for each cabbage moth they got. The oldest grandson knocked 2 out of the sky so far.
Weed tea is simply a bucket full of weeds, grass clippings, garden trimmings or whatever, filled with water and allowed to ferment and rot for at least a couple of weeks. The longer the better. I started mine a few months ago.
Add more weeds and stuff when you want, top off with more water when...
When I planted my peppers and tomatoes I mixed a good handful of the Garden Tone into the soil around the rootballs of the plants. It's supposed to feed them for a few months.
I side dressed the zucchinis and cukes with Garden Tone after they grew a bit and were thinned out.
Well, the only fertilizer I've used on my onions, shallots, beets, kale and cabbages this year is the stinky weed tea and they're all doing great. Are the plants feeding off of the inch thick layer of chicken run bedding I added to the garden last fall too? Probably, but logic tells me that...
The tomato support t-posts are all in place. I'll use the Florida weave to support the determinate Roma plants and the indeterminate tomatoes will be tied directly to the posts, with height extensions added as needed.
Just got back from TSC with a dozen new 6' T-posts I bought for tomato supports. Can't have too many T-posts...
I watered the upper garden this morning since it's going to hit 85 degrees or so this afternoon. The tomatoes, peppers and beans in the lower garden were looking OK so I decided that...
I just finished feeding the onions and shallots with weed tea fertilizer. I'll probably have to wash my hands two or three more times before the stink comes off. Watered the peas and carrots.
The peas are growing fast right now. I picked yesterday and there were several ready to pick today...
I've seen a few moths and noticed that something was eating on a couple of cabbages, and I found a big green caterpiller on the underside of one leaf I picked. I've started spraying them with BT every week or so. It's a selective bacterial insecticide that doesn't harm beneficial insects. And it...
