That's pretty cool and soooo very different from here. I kind of have a jungle situation! I'll try to drop some pics later. I also have 30-ish chickens.
Seriously we do things early and late and I try to keep the chickens from running around/getting upset. Mine are all pretty acclimatized. Equipment& feed storage are a problem (rust, mold, mildew) so I buy less bulk feed at a time. Daily rain leads to standing water so I can't mow. I make sure...
That's not good behavior. I make mine keep a distance, usually by advancing toward them making noise and stomping my feet. As long as they stay away from me and make no threatening moves, I leave them alone. Watch your back or don't turn your back - they can be sneaky. If he's over-mounting...
Mine were from Ideal Hatchery. I generally sell my 3 year old hens in the fall, some started pullets in the late spring each year. I am in South Louisiana.
I have 2, second year hens. Both produce fairly well and they are good sized hens but one is broody constantly. She raised a batch of biddies, took a month to start laying again and in another month was back to broody....every time I break her broody spell, she returns to broody in 2 weeks...
The national news is reporting a salmonella outbreak from a large egg producer. What can I do , as a backyard egg raiser, to reduce this threat to people who use eggs from my chickens. Most eggs I raise go to elderly friends and most have health issues.
Already planning for next year! Probably some cream legbars because the 2 I have are very enjoyable good laying hens. Definitely some new heavy layers but not the brown leghorns I got last year, they haven't worked out well. I was supposed to get Fayoumis this year but they got substituted by...
I have a 4 month old EE pullet that will be on the first sale post this fall because everyday I have to make her go out (she hides) and then I have to go out and bring her in. She'll run up and down along a 3' section of fence trying to get to the feeder and can't understand that one more foot...
Might have been. I have actually never seen the movie but every year my gym does a special Memorial Day Murphy workout in honor of that. I think Murphy may have been the one who sacrificed himself. The name was just stuck in my mind from the planning for the event.
Thank you all for the condolences. I usually have broody mamas & chicks in a pen inside the main coop but this hen was such a butthead (sorry to be speaking ill of the dead) that I couldn't put her with any other birds. This has been a crazy year for snakes, I usually see 2 or three all year but...
This is what a snake (probably a rat snake) can do. This was a year old full-sized brown leghorn hen with 5 x 2 week old chicks. They were in a metal dog kennel with extra smaller wire around the lower 2 feet and a plastic tarp cover. This kennel is inside a fenced yard with 3 grown livestock...
My #1 reason to sell a pullet or hen is inability to get in the line-up! I have sold birds that cannot seem to figure out how to turn the corner and go to the gate area.
I only feed mine in the evening. In the morning when I go to the pen, they all rush to the gate to go out to pasture. They have 100% access to the coop/nest boxes all day until feed time. In the evening I go in the coop and say "Out, Out!" and they all are trained to leave the pen while I put...
