As the unfortunate owner of an aggressive rooster, take the advice I have yet to and cull him. The predator protection is not worth the anxiety he is causing your hens.
Roosters are easy to find, as most people do not want them. If you really want another roo, look around on forums in your area...
Such beautiful chicks! I agree with you and the others where you only have one female. I was debating on BCM if my current hatch went sideways and now I am considering it regardless! SO CUTE.
Second chick has hatched.
When I checked on the flock pre-dawn I could not find it, despite finding the open shell. I looked under the broody, around the nest, on the ground, etc. I finally moved the broody off the remaining egg and heard faint peeping from the corner of the nest box. There was...
This is her first brood/hatch. They have 4 nest boxes between six hens, but she definitely took the preferred one.
I'll keep an eye out and have my brooding plate on and warm just in case. Thank you two, for your replies.
Aloha all,
I have an Olive Egger who went broody. I let her sit on three eggs and was expecting chicks on the 20th. The nest box is a raised box about a foot off the ground, which I plan on moving the broody and chicks to a ground floor fabric dog crate that the previous broody loved.
However...
Heya, update on this, though its very delayed.
The hen hated the treatment, which was expected. However, after removing what I could of the corm and applying Vetericyn she appears to have made a full recovery. There is no hint of any hesitation or limp in her gait.
Thank you to those who...
The problem with letting her stay with the flock is two fold. One is I can't guarantee dry litter, as the open air nature of the coop lets rain in the center area. Second is the roosts are about 5' off the ground.
I'll see how her foot looks today and assess more.
Hey all, follow up.
I soaked her foot for a half hour, checking on the sore edge every 10 minutes. After that time, I gently tried dislodging it with my fingers, with no result. I soaked her foot more and then attempted to very gently prod the scab with tweezers and saw some movement.
I spent...
Excellent source, thank you. I will try this once I can get a small area set aside for her to be separated from the rest of the flock. I will update with progress.
Aloha all,
I have a year old Olive egger who has been limping around for about two weeks. Today I snagged her to take a look at her feet. I'm almost certain she has Bumblefoot, but I wanted to get confirmation before I try any at home treatment. There are no poultry vets where I live, though I...
Good day everyone,
I have a mixed flock with 5 laying hens right now. The hens are producing really nice eggs regularly, with appropriately thick shells, rich color, appropriate weights, etc. Last week I noticed one hen laid an egg that looked like more white speckling was added after her usual...
I got two of five today. Still waiting on my hen who hatched out some chicks (two cockerels, one hen) to start laying again. Also dealing with my rooster being more mean and finches finding their ways into the coop and stressing my birds.
I haven't had them climb by coop either. I was not able to dig to put hardware cloth under my run, but I did an apron and its kept them out so far (6 months).
Thank you for your thoughts. I am unsure if I would part them out first, but I do see the benefit of removing the spines to make their tiny bodies easier to deal with.
I really appreciate ya!
Hey all,
I have two roosters that need to be culled. I have decided that they will have less trauma by having a humane death versus other solutions. However, this is my first time killing intentionally, let alone pets.
Below are my questions or uneasy points. Please feel free to answer any or...
So, I wanted to get a pulse from the community on an issue that is coming to a head.
I have read previous articles, posts, and polls regarding culling aggressive roosters.
Reason for my post is the roosters in question are pets and I am curious if anyone has been able to change aggressive...
Sorry I couldn't get a great one of her, but the group shots show you her size well. She's much smaller than the same age Olive Eggers, much closer to the Sebrights.
Hey all, as the title says this is a different type of request!
I have a mixed flock that has layers aged six months and a set of three pullets that just turned 15 weeks old.
The expected Australorp brown and Sebright cream eggs were found in the nest box this morning.
When I went out to give...
