Wet day, almost an inch of rain by the time I got home.

I gave them a little BOSS and dry cat food as a treat since it was too wet for me to go hunting for wild strawberries!
We're expecting temperatures to drop down into the 20s (F) so I redid my winter waterer.

I can pop out the ice that forms on the top, no damage to the rubber tub.
And then my flock enjoyed some fresh straw to scratch and collard leaves to eat!
I harvested 4-5 purple top turnips for Thanksgiving dinner, and after I stripped off most of the green leaves I gave the stalks and some leaves to the flock. They made happy noises.

They're Speckled Sussex, bantams. I wanted a heritage breed that was friendly, and found a local source for day old chicks. I'm planning on breeding the best to the best and seeing how close I can get to Standard.
I checked leg bands.
First I sprinkled at my feet some shredded cheese bits (from the bottom of a bag), and picked up each chicken as they crowded around. Joanna, Priscilla, and Silas needed a looser band. Esther's was okay. Martha's band was missing, and Hannah's was very faded, so they each...

I think he's doing this because they're no longer spurning his advances, they're HIS hens.
The area by the coop door has been decluttered, and a new containment fence added.
Due to predators my flock do not free-range, but occasionally a hen or two try to escape when I open the coop door. The fencing is meant as a discouragement, not proof against cats/dogs/etc.
