Our 3 older girls on one side of deer fencing (one old Dominique and 2 Silkie hens) with 3 new Silkie pullets on near side of deer fencing.
For a couple weeks we let them all see each other thru the fencing. At night we put the new Silkies in a corner of the coop on pine shavings and used...
Welcome! Silkies are so adorable.
DNA-sexing and Mareks vaccinating day-old chicks would help sell them. Cockerels are frequently given away free as many areas prohibit roo's while many buyers want more guaranteed DNA-sexed females.
From past heartaches as a paying customer I only purchase...
I never had Bieles but have had disappointment in collecting smaller or fewer eggs from other larger breeds. We had a Marans and Breda that were larger in the 7 to 7.5 lb weights and their eggs were medium-size at best at 2 eggs/week -- it was rare to collect 3 eggs in a week. Another unrelated...
TY for info on the Latin :)
You have two Doms now?
Never had a bad temperament Dom. Over the years we've had 4 hens since chicks & all were outgoing unafraid people-friendly chicks, not shy to hop onto our lap whether we had treats or not, talkative, later had calm temperaments as adults...
Bielies are reportedly calm temperaments. Maybe his temperament will give you an inkling of his breed. Was he a hatchery chick? Sure has pretty coloring.
Not sure what In Albis means but she's certainly a pretty Dom! Our one remaining Dom will be 7 yrs old this August & every spring in her old age lays 3 or 4 eggs. She's a lap chicken. She used to jump up but now needs to be picked up. She waits for my DH to escort her to the coop every evening.
Beautiful Dom avatar pic! Wish I had a farm to raise Doms. Wonderful breed & their feathers so soft & odorless. No wonder Pilgrims used their feathers for bedding. :)
We've had different breeds over 13 years. Amazing how there are different personalities in chickens. We are like "helicopter parents" with our chickens monitoring them constantly and evaluating the "best" breeds to keep in our backyard. We started with two Silkie chicks given free to us by a...
Oh, that is so sad that your hen is so timid. I currently have a similar situation -- two adult Silkie hens (who have been together since babies) where one is aggressive and one is calmer and the calm one does her best to stay out of the aggressive Silkie's way -- they are 4-yrs-old now...
4 years ago we picked up 2 DNA-sexed female Silkie chicks from a local Silkie breeder. One chick was so obnoxious and hyperactive she peeped all the way home from the breeder and kept picking at the other calmer chick. She was aggressive all through her juvenile, pullet, and adult growth. The...
I love Silkies with 5 of my own today (plus one old Dominique hen). I had the same issue as you -- 2 Silkies for 6 yrs and then one passed and left a lone Silkie.
For biosecurity reasons you may find it difficult for someone w/chickens to take in an outside bird (for her and their biosecurity...
