Is it possible that the differences in Fret's behaviour is that she is still mourning/pining for Henry or the lack of a male presence? Not necessarily in a psychological way, the way we humans mourn, but in a biological way. Or could the failure of the broody switch to flip, be the chicken...

We have a few the 5-gallon cup waterers too, we keep these in the shady spots, (what a game changer!), several regular waterers and several open waterers scattered around so they don't ever have to go far for a drink, plus the turkeys have access to the shallow areas of the pond. They are far...

Our boys pitch in to help or supervise everything we do. I would be miserably unhappy without them.

You sound like a man about to or at least closer to introducing a new cockerel or rooster to the field. ;-) I love hearing my boys, and I always get a serenade. I know each individual's unique "voice" and I can tell when it is just a hello, or if something needs attention.

I think their comfort comes from 3 things, 1. Summer here can be hot and humid, just plain miserable. The high grass is up to my knees in most places, so well over their heads, so it offers shade, but air flow. 2. This is their land, where they grew up (the majority were hatched here. :-) )...
