That's been my biggest issue. I'm in a small town and there's no one really near-by who trains or works dogs. But I'm planning to work my one dog, maybe two if I can train the shepherd. He's been trying to mimic the one border collie.
Haven't had any issues with laying in random locations. But mine stay in the coop and run till the afternoon. (Training dogs so they can't free roam all day)
Tons of bushes, leaving the run and coop open during their free run time. If anything triggers the rooster they all go under the bushes...
I wouldn't mind too much but I know the boy wants to herd. And I'm not sure the adult ducks we ended up with will ever go willingly to the coop. I've had to walk them there every night.
And the additional chickens we got aren't wanting to use the coop. So presently they don't get to free roam...
Oh I know. I was like well.. there's 4 that they could be and all share similar colors and Perkins can have the light bills like this too. 😆
My husband would love for them to be Perkins. We ended up with an adult pair.. and so we ended up getting these with hopes a few are hens.
My biggest issue was I had the dogs for a few years and just got the chickens. He was so excited when they were chicks that he was vibrating. He wanted to boop them but baby chicks are fragile XD (and after what I paid to have them shipped.. lol I had to be careful).
He does ok when they are...
Anyone have suggestions or ideas on where to look or how to start working on border collies and adjusting them to chickens/ducks.
We just got ducks and they are used to dogs thankfully. But my border collie has no idea how to react haha. My fault for not having him trained to clock and counter...
Wasn't he? He was a 7 year old roo gifted to my grandpa after they found out his granddaughter (me) had hens.. XD He was mean and flew into me but we worked out our differences. Lived till he passed of old age. I'm not sure how old he was. But he was up there.
So we have a hen broody again after the last disappointment. She's only got 3 eggs, but I'm ok with that. I ended up taking in 10 random hens from someone moving and unable to keep them (all duel purpose birds) and a pair of pekins.. this lead us to getting 4 more ducks. XD I wasn't planning...
They are tractor supply specials.. so the sole thing I know is that they aren't mallards and they aren't runner ducks haha.
I was told they were Pekin.. but I don't think they are? Just curious what you all think or may see.
Over all doesn't matter, just figured it'd be fun to guess. I'm...
That was my thought too, I feel bad as the lady paid for the breeds she listed off. I have no clue either. Maybe I can get some better photos today when they are awake again. They are all skittish and not friendly. :( Still young though, so I'm sure they'll warm up to where my flock is and...
1 splash Australorp
4 new Hampshire
3 speckled Sussex
2 red cross
is what I was told these all were. Most of them I can see.. I'm assuming the black chickens in the photo are supposed to be the Sussex? I have doubts, so any idea what they could be? These were free chickens from someone who...
see that's what I thought too, but that one with the group of females is being posted as the seller selling drakes. I was just making sure.. now maybe they were just posting a photo that they had on hand of the birds.. I've seen some do that.
So recently I found myself as the owner of 2 pekin hens.. in my venture to find a drake I stumbled on someone selling some welsh harlequins. They were one of my dream ducks .. and if I am already caring for ducks. I may as well branch out and get a few.
Though I have been trying to be able to...
Yes I had read and watched countless things on what and how to mix feed. Anyone have a list of things to just look for.. For a overall balance. I know this isn't the cheapest method but I only have a handful of chickens. They get to free roam everyday, get scraps and everything. They enjoy their...
Well some more sad news. Another chick hatched this afternoon. It didn't look like it was fully ready so I don't know if momma crushed that egg too? But it wasn't alive when I checked and had fly strike.
This chick she has may be a solo baby. The other eggs look viable and she is still sitting...
In other news.. my rooster has earned his keep. I've been letting them free roam the yard after 5 or 6 each day. Last night a young possum must have gotten in through the roof.. (I need to out hardware cloth up there and cut the branches back now to the trees). But the possum didn't get to do...
Well I didn't keep any of the 8 chicks. I sold them locally. I don't really have space for more chickens .. not reasonably anyway.
Though I have a second hen trying to hatch. She may only end up with one chick. I didn't know she had crushed 2 or 3 eggs and they were all over the rest of the...
Oh my gosh thank you! I was scratching my head on this and it was so weird. Cause everyone in my flock has been healthy, zero issues. So I wasn't sure what was going on. I assumed it had gotten hurt somehow but I wasn't sure if it was fixable.
Literally just took a pin out there (my local shops...
We are a year into the flock, one broody hen has hatched out 9 eggs (one chick passed at a day old, and it looks like we may lose a second a week in.. these things happen).
But I have a second hen sitting on 24 eggs.. because I got sick and I wasn't able to collect eggs for a few days. I have...
