I've read that Polish are somewhat high maintenence compared to other breeds....one reason being that they can't see as well due to impaired vision from their crests blocking vision. As a result, they can be more prone to injury. I get around this by giving my Polish 'haircuts'. It works well...
Hi All,
Finally getting around to posting pics of my pallet coop build. Keep in mind that this build has been an ongoing project dating back to when I first got my flock a couple years ago. First I made a 'temporary' coop out of a tile packing crate,,,you may see a pic or two of that coop...
Just wondering what other folks have used....I've checked Lowe's, Home Depot, local window suppliers....no one seems to have "shed" type windows. Maybe I'm just not asking the right questions....has anyone used the windows advertised as "shed or chicken coop" windows on ebay?
This coop building story started Good Friday....for some reason my wife suggested that we go to Tractor Supply to "look at chicks". She even called the TSC to see if they had any chicks in stock. I was a bit taken aback, as usually SHE is the one offering resistance to adding more chickens to...
Anyone else have a Easter Hatch?? Our broody hen is doing a great job we have six little fuzzy Cuckoo Marans so far with two more eggs pipped (and cheeping on the inside, lol). So exciting! What a great Easter!
I just LOVE it. It's a vintage copper jello mold I got at an estate sale last weekend, it's sieving double-duty as my avatar and as kitchen wall art...
In other news we got SIX NEW CHICKS yesterday! Not quite sure what got into wifey yesterday when she suggested we make the 30 minute drive to...
First of all, for a little background on my chicken Goldie, here is the link to another story I posted about her...

Since I posted that story, Goldie finally decided to permanently join her flock mates full-time a couple...
What do I do, I don't want my hen to go broody? I only have small backyard flock of 6 in the city with no roo, so I don't want any broody hens. I only have 4 layers as it is b/c one is molting and another still is not laying yet. And now my 6 egg/week Barred Rock seems to being going broody. Of...
This topic seems to come up somewhat frequently as I've read the threads with interest in months past. Having made quite a few pickled eggs in the past with storebought eggs, and having had quite the frustrating time with peeling said storebought eggs, I was eager to try out boiling the eggs...
My barred rock sat on the nest for a good three hours today, then got up no egg. Then we found an egg yolk awhile later after my wife saw her sitting in a Tonka Dump Truck, of all places. Do we need to do anything? Will she be ok? Babe has been laying for only about 2-3 weeks.
Have heard many mention the egg song, but what is it...how does it sound? Maybe i finally heard it this morning when my Barred Rock 'Babe' was ready to lay but found a flock mate in the nest box. So Babe says...."bok bok bok Ba GAWK!! Bok bok bok bok bok bok baGAWK!! BOK bok bok bok BaGAWK...
My Buff Orp has been laying for about three weeks, and she has very light brown eggs. This morning her egg was VERY light colored almost cream colored. I feed her layer feed and she gets lots of treats and free-ranges all day...is there something she's not getting nutrition wise? Is something...
my girls are about 2 months old and on chick starter, but about 2 weeks ago they started free-ranging all day long (daily) and seem very healthy/happy. Do I need to get them grit? Of course they peck and scratch almost every waking moment in my backyard (urban) and I'm guessing they have found...
I am new to chickens and got started about mid-June with 6 hens. Our 2 Wyandottes, 2 Buff Orps, and 2 Polish cresteds were the new family pets. My girls, ages 6 and 9 absolutely loved them, these birds were held every day. We raised them in a rubbermaid on top of the coffee table in the living...
