This is a dark brahma rooster's rear end. It is very bright red and obviously looks inflamed or something. What is it? How can I treat it? I have two dark brahma's in this pen and they both have this a little bit, but this one is the worst.
Black Australorp hen, 3 years old, presents with white diarrhea since yesterday, fluid build-up in lower body, weak, closing eyes. I don't feel an egg. The fluid is not in the front, it's on her rear, below the vent.
My favorite, young and healthy Red Star was found dead yesterday. I am very perplexed because she had no signs of illness. Is this just a Red Star thing (as in, this breed has a short life span or something)? I didn't feel any lumps. We couldn't do a necropsy this time because it's too cold...
Hen is walking vertically like a penguin. We felt around and it feels like a water balloon with perhaps an egg floating in it. We definitely feel lots of fluid. My husband doesn't think there's an egg in there. I'm not sure, but there is a lot of fluid and things floating in it.
I have some two month old chicks that I am integrating into an older flock. They are inside a dog kennel, which is inside the coop they will be joining. They have sat in this kennel for three days. The chickens can see and hear everyone else, but can't touch. When can I open the kennel door...
Yesterday a red fox was chasing my cat and the cat dove through our electric fence and the fox stopped and stared right at me in broad daylight! I'm not sure if the fox stopped because he couldn't make it through the electric fence or he stopped because he saw me? Now I am very concerned for...
I have two separate flocks of free range chickens. They all get locked into their coops overnight and take turns every other day being outside to free range. I would like to get to the point where both coops free range at the same time. So that means they would "meet" for the first time while...
So far we are a bit disappointed with our new Indian Runner ducks. They seem to be a bit unintelligent. They can't learn how to go in and out of their duck house. They are extremely startled by everything, including me bringing food and water. They want to stay in their duck house and never...
My Indian Runner ducklings are getting wet from head to toe and look terrible. Their drinking water is not big enough to swim in, and yet they manage to get completely wet. They are not even a month old yet and so their fur is all crusted up and dirty from drying under the heat lamp. I...
One of my Indian Runner ducklings is a runt. It is quite apparent now as the others are about twice her size! It looks weird. Does this mean anything? Like is it a male/female? Or just crappy genetics?
I just received my ten Indian Runner duckling yesterday. All ten were happily eating, drinking, and basking in the heat lamp. I noticed when I pick up the ducklings, they start to regurgitate the water they drank. It's not like I'm squeezing them, I'm just picking them up and gently petting...
The bottle of penicillin says not to exceed four consecutive days. Then again, poultry is not even mentioned on the bottle, so it's not like the instructions are for poultry period. I don't want to overdose or kill my rooster, but I also don't want to create resistant bacteria either. I've...
Here are updated pictures of my Brahma rooster's feet and legs. I'm starting to wonder if he had scaly leg mites so bad that it led to such an infection. I also wonder about bumblefoot, but it doesn't look that severe under his feet. I don't feel a hard kernel. Someone also mentioned gout...
I have lost numerous chickens to impacted gizzard. We have done a necropsy each time to confirm this. One time it was impacted with fibers from those flower planters that are like straw. Another time it was 100% grass impaction. The other time it was pieces of glass in the gizzard. It's...
The Light Brahma in question. (above) She has more red around the eyes.
A Dark Brahma (left) and the same Light Brahma (right).
I'm wondering the sex of both Brahmas.
How can you give a chicken antibiotics systemically? My rooster has a bad case (so I think) of scaly leg mites which has led to swelling and infection. The daily topical spraying has improved the legs somewhat, in that they are a lighter pink. But they are quite dry now and still swollen. I...
We've been feeding Dumor Chick Starter and now that they are approaching ten weeks, the bag said to switch to the grower/finisher (and layers, of course, when they reach point of lay). But my husband bought another 50 lb. bag of the chick starter 24% protein instead of moving onward to the...
