I was working on my laptop today with my back to the door. Imagine seeing this when I turned around. Apparently, my cats had managed to open a sliding glass door. My girls decided to silently creep in and sit with the head chook. They absolutely knew what they were doing, since I didn't hear...
Greetings from beautiful Milpitas, CA. We're just a few miles from Google, Facebook, Yahoo!, Apple, to name a few. We have four pet chooks in a standard suburban lot. Looking forward to hearing from other BYC members and hooking up with local chicken pet owners.
Here's a photo of my girls:
Rhettie, my two year old Black Star, started laying 3 1/2" eggs. Is this normal? She's very healthy and doesn't seem to have any trouble laying the supersized eggs. Ouch! That must hurt, though.
I was experimenting with the close-up feature on my new camera today, when I caught this shot of Mildred the Hen. The close up shows things I never noticed with the naked eye. It's funny how much the chooks resemble their reptile ancestors.

I have a small flock of four ladies in a typical suburban sized backyard. I would like to start bee keeping this spring. Nothing extravagant; just a single hive. Does anyone know of issues with keeping bees and chickens within close proximity? Will the chickens eat the bees?
We have a young possum living under our deck in the backyard. Usually, he only comes out at night after the girls are asleep in their coop. Today, I threw a big juicy tomato out for an afternoon treat. I looked out a few minutes later and the possum and our small flock were at a standoff over...
Hi,
I'm new to BYC and this has probably already been posted sometime in the past. I, my friends and family have come up with as list of chicken related phrases, idioms, words and references that you might find amusing. Please feel free to add to the list. Have fun!
Dont count your...
Hi All,
My family is new to BYC and to raising chickens. We live in Milpitas, CA which is just north of San Jose and at the South end of the San Francisco Bay. I've wanted to raise chickens for several years now, but didn't think it was practical in a densely populated suburban area. How...
