2010 Gold Laced Orpington Project (and my first SPLASH)

Well, the insanity has started for 2010! I will be hatching around 40 chicks every 2 weeks for a couple of months and we'll see how long I keep it up for. I'm trying to get a fair amount of chicks from each of 3 family lines. This first batch was 20 chicks.. only 4 keepers Because of this...

    Caring for Freedom Rangers

Ok... so I was thinking, no big deal.. I care for hundreds of chicks/chickens... Orpingtons & Australorps anyway. But these Colored Rangers are a bit different right? Do they need any "special" care I wouldn't normally provide? I was thinking of raising them in a cold brooder indoors in the...

Black Bean Veggie "Burgers" by Dawn

So I thought I would share our newest recipe here 'on the Farm. Growing up in a Cuban family, we ate our weight in black beans probably every month so it's fun for me to find new ways to revamp an old favorite. It's NOT "easy" but it's not hard.. it takes a couple of days because I NEVER...

How much meat does your family consume?

We consume approximately in 1 year for our family of 3. 144lbs of pork/ham 96lbs of poultry 48lbs of red meats/beef/bison/deer we eat almost NO fish or seafood... I know that part is weird I'm calculating this because after seeing Food, Inc I am making other arrangements for our meat supplies.

Bragging about my Boy, our LGD

My Boy is the MOST wonderful dog of all of our 5 dogs. He showed up a couple weeks after I got chickens 2 summers ago while we were still building our first Hen House. He seemed like the perfect dog, big sweet boy that he was. We got him all cleaned up and have loved him ever since. He...

ARRRGGGhhh... darn mites are back again!!!

The mice population has started to boom again and they have a favorite coop. Unfortunately, one male & female in that coop were in REALLY bad shape when I figured this out.
