    Chicken fledglings and rats

Put my fledgling silkie bantams out with rest of my hens and they accepted them pretty well. However, it appears our habit of throwing out fruit and veges to chickens has attracted rats. Worse yet, it appears that one or more of them have developed a taste for young fledgling silkies! Rats...

    Splash silkie...hen or roo?

I know Silkies are notoriously hard to sex before six months old, but any guesses would be welcome. This is Velveteen. Gotta love the poofy tail! lol. Think she is about six weeks old in picture.

Surprise! What type of chicken did we hatch?

We accidently took over a classified thread from Yashar so we are moving thread here. We ordered some Silkie eggs from Chookschicks and when they hatched 2 or them did not look "right". They had yellow/grey legs and beaks instead of black they should have and no feathers on legs..... So we...

Mixed flock. South American breed...male or female?

We have 9 chicks from our first hatch and they are a mixed bunch. 2 silkies, 4 cochins with frizzle gene, 1 black orpington, and 2 surprise south americans. Any guesses on gender would really help. This is Lavender, one of the South Americans.

    Surrogate Hen?

I have been around chickens since I was little, but we never played with them or really handled them. They were food and egg layers. I did not know what I was missing. I "henned" my first chick in high school. The mom had set her eggs too late in the fall and a frost killed the only...

Six year old Silkie lost use of one leg.

We hand raised this white silkie and about a week ago she started dragging her right leg. She is almost 6 years old and I suspect she slipped on ramp on way down or had a stroke. Eyes clear, feathers healthy...just cannot walk on the leg. She hobbles around anyway, but in very limited way...

hiya am new to backyard chickens, but not....

I was raised in Eastern Oregon on small farm and on the outskirts of a small town. We had chickens on the farm, but they were egg sources and food, not pets. We had geese in town/outskirts...they were pets. Not sure I remember why they eventually left our possession over time. We moved to...
