Do you think this plan will work for my broody hen?

I've got a two year old Rhode Island Red hen that I believe is broody. We call her our "Rogue" because she was adopted from a friend whose entire flock was taken by predators, except Hazel. He allowed them to free range at all times and did not lock them up at night. I have never been able to...

Did you know chickens can crack nuts?

At least this one can! I found it at a yard sale to day. Isn't it awesome? http://trinketsvintagetreasures.blogspot.com/2010/09/who-knew-chickens-could-crack-nuts.html

    Do you get chicken "hugs"?

I do! I have six hens, three of them Barred Rocks. Every morning when I go down to the coop to let the Girls out, I open the top half of the dutch door and Harriette immediately jumps up on the bottom door and snuggles up against me! She'll stay that way as long as I let her, while the other...

    Flowers overtaking my little coop!

Yes, beautifying your coop with flowers is possible! Once they get established, watch out!

    Under the Hedgerow...

These are four of my Girls, Alice, Harriette, Isabelle and Lucy, looking a bit annoyed that I invaded their private area under the hedgerow in their big run. I highly recommend fencing in a brushy area for your chickens! They LOVE being able to disappear at will, and are easy to coax out...

    Hen with sour crop...

I've read quite a bit on here about crop impaction and sour crop, which my hen, Opal, definitely has. We managed to get some olive oil and water down her gullet, and massaged her crop. She then puked up a good quantity of very smelly green ooze. A while later I fed her some plain yogurt. She...

    Chickens and Flower beds

I have six hens that I allow to freerange for about an hour or two a day, with supervision. I also have lots of flower beds spread out around my large yard and the girls love foraging for goodies in them. I don't follow them around, I just keep an eye on them from a moderate distance and shoo...

Got a GREAT deal on black oil sunflower seeds at TSC...

I went to my local TSC today, to pick up scratch for my Girls. I like to mix bos in with it, so checked the bird feed section and found 40 LB BAGS OF BOS FOR $9.99!!! My Girls usually pick all the bos out before they eat the rest of the scratch, so they are happy, happy chickens today!

Do your hens create nice, tidy circular nests for their eggs?

I had no idea that hens would actually build a nest, but I've got one hen who spends alot of time fussing with the straw in the nest box and creates a lovely bowl shape with it. After she lays her egg, she seems to have some trouble breaking out of "nesting mode". She wanders around outside...

    Just feathers, no blood...

What kind of predator would leave behind just a pile of clean feathers? No blood, guts or other body parts. We found a pile of white feathers on the far corner of our yard, just 100 yds. or so from my coop, and a neighbors pigeon hutch in the other direction. We determined it was the remains...

    Grass hay or Alfalfa??

My six Girls are used to free ranging in our yard at least a couple of hours a day. They have a wide variety of foliage to pick from- various flowers and herbs, bushes and plenty of tall grass and weeds and of course the lawn. I want to supplement thier food in the Winter months so they'll...

    Who is the Head Hen???

I've been watching my six girl's behavior, trying to determine which one of them will assume the roll of "Head Hen". I don't have a roo, so I assume one of the girls will take charge. None of them have really taken a dominant role that I can see, so far. They are all laying and all get along...

Pics of my Girls- Roosting time (or Shades and patterns)

Hi All! I snapped a couple of shots of my Girls today while they were roosting on the back of a bench. I thought they looked so pretty, with their different feather colors and patterns. I've got three Barred Rocks, but one of them was sitting on the ground when I took the pic. For some...

    Whooo Hooo!! Six for six!!

I'm so proud of my Girls! I've got six hens, and today, for the first time, I got six eggs!! Granted, some of them are still little pullet eggs, but at least now I can stop calling them free loaders!

Pics of my "Playhouse" Coop and Run

Hello Everyone- It was suggested that I post a pic of my Chicken Coop that my Hubby and I made from a children's playhouse that I purchased at 1/2 price at Lowes. I incorporated the whole setup into what I call my Chicken Garden- still a work in progress. My six Girl's seem to love it. They...
