First time incubating Bobwhite quail or any other bird for that matter

Just hatched out my first attempt at incubating quail. Had 50 Bobwhite quail eggs in a Maticoop that I bought after reading some decent reviews on it. So far about 25 have hatched since 3am yesterday. Not to bad for a first timer and especially after a delay by the postal service delivering the...

    xxx bear

I had just gone to bed about 8:30 last night. About 9pm my stepson bursts through the bedroom door shouting that a bear is attacking the chickens! Thankfully we scared it off before it could get any of them but it did some damage to the coop. (i will post pics later, it's still too dark to take...

    First egg(update page 2)

Went out to the coop this morning and found a broken eggshell in the nest. Bummed I didn't get it before it broke. Now I'm excited and have been checking the box every couple of hrs. My question is do they start laying consistently right off the bat or is it varied starting off.

    Fishing with my daughter

Went out along the Delaware river yesterday with my 8 yr old daughter. She caught this one all by herself with no help from dad at all. She was proud as a RIR rooster.(I was gonna say peacock, but we like chickens better).

    Cats out of the bag

Well I let my 8yr old daughter go across the street to the neighbors house because they asked her to come visit.(not worried I could see her out my window at all times) 5 minutes later she comes running in the door and she says "they're onto us. They asked me what we built on the side of the...

should I eat my kids pets?

Well being a bumbling idiot I walked into tsc at Easter and came home with 6 chicks for my daughter. Not knowing jack about chickens then I came home with 5 cornish x and one rir (which was the last one they had). Needless to say after discovering BYC and doing some reading I was none to happy...

    mad as a wet weasel

So last Sunday I'm at work in the hospital when I hear my license plate # paged overhead. I go out to the parking lot to find my car (2004 Honda Pilot) had been hit in the back by a 84 yr old woman leaving the hospital. I finally get the police report today and contact their insurance company...

some of lifes lessons are hard

So the chicks I got for my 8yr old daughter were doing fine. That is until last night. One of them looked sick and couldn't stand on it's own. My poor daughter cried all the way to school even though I tried to reassure her that this was natures way and that sometimes chicks do not survive. When...

    Greetings

Just a quick introduction from a new chicken owner in NJ. Just purchased 6 chicks at a local store for my 8 yr old daughter to have. She simply adores them. We live in a residental area but our zoning law is very vague and I can somewhat hide the coop/run on one side of my house. Look foward to...
