2 hens dead in 2 days no sign of injury or illness

Two days ago I found a 2 year old hen dead. Rigor mortis had not yet set in. There were no signs of injury or illness. She died laying on her stomach with her legs straight out behind her, as if she had just fallen forward while standing. I have had chickens for 11 years. I have never found one...

Hen-pecked polish roo trying to regrow crest

I have a young Polish rooster that had his crest feathers plucked out by the flock. I tried everything to discourage the pullets from picking at his new feathers (blue coat, pine tar, no pick lotion, higher protein feed). Nothing worked. They love the blood in the new feathers. I separated him...

    5 day old chick limping

My 5-day old polish chick is limping. I don't see any obvious injury to her left leg or foot. She can bend her toes around my finger but she appears to not want to put weight on her foot. She is eating and drinking. What should I do?

Injured Silkie. Barely able to walk. Standing & eating ok. *UPDATE*

Last night I noticed that my beloved silkie, Miss Perdy, was having some difficulty walking. She fell off the perch while attempting to roost. She regained her composure and made it to the nest box to roost. This AM I was about to leave for work when I noticed that she was lying on her side on...

Day 27 - Did float test - questions? **update**

The eggs are on day 27. One hatched last night. I did a float test just now. Three eggs sank, the others floated to the top. What does that mean? If it sinks is it still good? What do I do now? As a side note: the chick that hatched has deformed feet.

I am going away tomorrow afternoon and my eggs are still in the incubator (7/13 will be the 27th day!!). Now the person who was supposed to watch my chicks will now have to care for any hatching babies. I have to move the incubator to the "chick sitter's" home. I have a plan, do you think it...

5 hour old chick with deformed toes - please advise

This is the 26th day and my first of 18 eggs has finally hatch. Yet, the OEG chick has deformed toes. To be exact: on both feet the outermost toe is fused to the middle toe. Do you think the chick will be able to walk/have a normal life?

Finally after waiting 26 days my one of my eggs is hatching. I still have 17 eggs left to hatch. I didn't realize it would take THIS long for them to hatch! First day of lock down and I have a problem w/ temp!! I need advice.

I had to cull two older hens today and I am heart sick :(

As I stated in the title of this post I had to cull 2 hens today due to a chronic illness. It went as well as this kind of thing can go. I felt like a trader though! They trusted me completely and I was the one who took thier life. How long will it take for this heaviness in my heart to...

NEW TO INCUBATING - why is the temp changing??

I have a still-air Little Giant incubator with an automatic egg turner. For 1 week before starting any eggs I maintained 99.5F but when I put in 41 eggs (8:30pm last night) and warm water my temp went up to 101F over night! The incubator is in my basement where the temp is steady at 65F. I am...

My neighbor is complaining about my rooster :/

Okay so here's the issue: My Silkie roo has been crowing at 2:30am several times a week. I have started to turn off the light that is by my side door since he can see that when he roosts. I make sure that I sleep with my window open at night because if my neighbor (he now has) complains about...

    Flock Intergartion Complete :)

Yippee!! I have intergarted birds before and it has been stressful to say the least. I have been progressivly weeding out the most aggressive birds over the last year. My work has paid off! Yesterday I intergrated 7 young pullets in with my existing flock. It went a lot better than I had...

I want to put out my chciks outside in the coop (seperate from the rest of the flock). Here in Southern Maine it has been in the high 30's to the low 40's at night. During the day it is in the 50's to low 60's. How warm do they need to be? Currently they are in my basement and under the heat...
